A tit-for-tat response against the U.K. is coming from an Iranian official. Melissa Duggan on the threat that follows the seizure of an oil tanker suspected of carrying Iranian oil to Syria.

Iran said Saturday the United Kingdom should be “scared” of possible retaliation after the Royal Marines captured an Iranian supertanker in Gibraltar.  “I am openly saying that Britain should be scared of Iran’s retaliatory measures over the illegal seizure of the Iranian oil tanker,” Mohammad Ali Mousavi Jazayeri, a member of a powerful group of clerics, was quoted as saying in Fars, Iran’s semi-official news agency.  “We have shown that we will never remain silent against bullying … As we gave a staunch response to the American drone, the appropriate response to this illegal capture (of the tanker) will be given by Iran as well,” Reuters reported.  The tanker was seized on Thursday for trying to take oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions.  Iran also repeated threats to increase its level of enriched uranium beyond limits stipulated in the 2015 nuclear deal, which the US exited.  “Americans directly and Europeans indirectly violated the deal,” a top aide to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a video posted Saturday on an Iranian website.  Ali Akbar Velayati, Khamenei’s adviser on international affairs, said in the video that increasing enrichment closer to weapons-grade levels was “unanimously agreed upon by every component of the establishment,” the Associated Press reported.  “We will show reaction exponentially as much as they violate it. We reduce our commitments as much as they reduce it,” said Velayati, Khamenei’s adviser on international affairs. “If they go back to fulfilling their commitments, we will do so as well.”  The video follows similar threats on Wednesday. President Trump responded to those earlier threats with a tweet warning the nation to “Be careful with the threats, Iran. They can come back to bite you like nobody has been bitten before!”  Iran wants European leaders to offer a way for Tehran to avoid punishing economic sanctions, especially those targeting its crucial oil sales, that Trump put in place in the year since he pulled the US out of the pact.  With Post wires read more

An Iranian official has threatened to seize a British oil tanker if a detained Iranian ship is not released. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday Britain would face “consequences” over the seizure of an Iranian oil tanker. He also said Iran’s increase in uranium enrichment was for peaceful aims, the semi-official news agency Tasnim reported. Iran has demanded the immediate release of the tanker Grace 1, which British Royal Marines boarded off the coast of Gibraltar last week and seized over accusations it was breaking sanctions by taking oil to Syria. “You [Britain] are the initiator of insecurity and you will realise the consequences later,” Rouhani was quoted by Tasnim as saying after a cabinet meeting. Rouhani also said Iran’s decision to increase uranium enrichment would produce fuel for power plants and serve other peaceful aims, and that it was within the framework of Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.  It comes as Britain deployed Royal Navy warship HMS Montrose into the Strait of Hormuz to protect UK shipping after Iran threatened to seize them in revenge. She is believed escorted oil tanker Pacific Voyager as she sailed through the piece of sea that separates the United Arab Emirates from Iran. The tanker had to be checked on by UK officials over the weekend as she stopped close to Iranian waters. The waterway has been the scene of five attacks of tankers this year amid a renewed flaring of tensions in the Gulf.    Iran has been squaring up to the West as it reels over the scrapping of the so-called nuclear deal by the US, which traded a pledge not to develop nukes for eased sanctions. The ayatollah has been demanding that nations such as Britain and its European allies pick-up the slack as Donald Trump’s administration imposes crushing new penalties. Britain however infuriated Iran last week when the Royal Marines seized the Grace 1 supertanker as she entered the Mediterranean. Commandos took the vessel without a shot being fired as it is suspected of breaching EU sanctions on the brutal Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad.    Iran responded by threatening to seize British ships in retaliation amid fears of a new tanker war in the Gulf.  Five oil tankers and a cargo ship have been attacked in the Gulf in the past two months. Tehran denies any involvement in the attacks, but they have been blamed by the US.  And in an escalation, Iran shot down a US drone – nearly prompting a limited strike by Washington before an 11th hour U-turn by Trump.     Iran has since broken its nuclear agreement by stepping up its enrichment of uranium. Tehran has said the measures are just for power plant fuel, and will not be used for the development of nukes. The foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany, plus the foreign affairs chief of the European Union, said in a statement that Iran was “pursuing activities inconsistent with its commitments”. Trump’s administration argues the deal was too soft on Iran and it didn’t impact its missile programme of sponsor of terrorism. read more

A court in the British colony of Gibraltar has ordered a seized Iranian oil tanker to be detained for an additional two weeks.

British Royal Marines seized the supertanker Grace 1 on Thursday, accusing it of trying to take oil to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions. But this dramatic step has infuriated Iran, threatening to escalate confrontations with the West. Mohsen Rezai, a senior commander in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards said in a tweet: “If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the (Iranian) authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker.” He added: “Islamic Iran in its 40-year history has never initiated hostilities in any battles but has also never hesitated in responding to bullies.” Tehran had summoned the British ambassador to voice “its very strong objection to the illegal and unacceptable seizure” of its ship. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the Iranian oil tanker was carrying crude oil from Iran, according to the state news agency IRNA. Gibraltar said it had reasonable grounds to believe the Grace 1 was carrying crude oil to the Baniyas refinery in Syria. The Grace 1 was impounded off the coast of Gibraltar after sailing around Africa – the longer route from the Middle East to the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea The EU has had sanctions in place for nearly a decade that restrict oil sales to Syria. Europe does not have broad sanctions in place against Iran, but the US does, forcing Tehran into mainstream markets to look for unconventional outlets to sell oil. But Spain also reignited its war of words with Britain over sovereignty in Gibraltar following the seizure of the tanker. Acting Foreign Minister Josep Borrell has claimed Gibraltar detained the supertanker Grace 1 after a request by the US to Britain. Mr Borrell, who is set to take over as the EU’s foreign policy chief, said the Spanish Government had been kept informed about the seizure. But he added they would look at whether it violated its territorial water claims. Spain does not recognise Britain’s sovereignty over Gibraltar, which dates all the way back to a 1713 treaty. Mr Borrell said, according to the Europa Press news agency: “We’re looking at which way this affects our sovereignty, in as far as it took place in waters whose sovereignty we understand to belong to Spain. This is a breaking story. Großbritannien beschlagnahmt Iranischen Tanker vor Gibraltar Iran droht mit Gegenmaßnahmen 5.07.2019

An Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander threatened on Friday to seize a British ship in retaliation for the capture of an Iranian supertanker in Gibraltar by Royal Marines.
“If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker,” Mohsen Rezai said on Twitter.

The Gibraltar government said the crew on board the supertanker Grace 1 were being interviewed as witnesses, not criminal suspects, in an effort to establish the nature of the cargo and its ultimate destination. read more

Britain has been plunged into a diplomatic row with Iran after Royal Marines seized an Iranian oil tanker as it passed through the Strait of Gibraltar, in a move likely to further inflame tensions in the Gulf.
The Grace 1 supertanker was boarded in the early hours of Thursday (Thursday afternoon NZ time) to prevent it from delivering a cargo of crude oil to Syria in defiance of EU sanctions, apparently following a request to the UK from the US.
The move provoked fury in Iran, which accused Britain of bowing to US pressure to blockade its oil exports and summoned the British ambassador to the foreign ministry in Tehran to express “its very strong objection to the illegal and unacceptable seizure” of the 1080-foot (329-metre) vessel.
Abbas Moussavi, a spokesman, called the move “destructive” and said it could increase tensions in the Persian Gulf, where six oil tankers have suffered attacks that Britain and the US have blamed on Iran.

A specialist team from the Royal Marines’ maritime operations unit swooped as the vessel paused to take on supplies off Gibraltar overnight.
The 30 commandos boarded the ship by abseiling from a Wildcat helicopter and climbing aboard from a Pacific 24 high-speed boat, allowing 16 Royal Gibraltar Police officers to search the vessel in a safe manner.
The operation was over in minutes with no shots fired. Fabian Picardo, Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, said he authorised the assault because he believed the ship was bound for the Baniyas refinery in Syria.
Josep Borrell, Spain’s foreign minister, said Britain had acted at the request of the US. Borrell added that Madrid was assessing the implications of the incident because it took place in waters it considers its own.
Britain’s Foreign Office said Rob Macaire, the UK ambassador in Tehran, told the foreign ministry that the move was about enforcing sanctions on Syria, not on Iran, and that Britain views Iranian oil exports in general as legitimate.
Lloyd’s List, the shipping publication, said the 300,000-ton, Panamanian-flagged tanker loaded oil off Iran in April before sailing around the Cape of Good Hope, a lengthy route apparently taken because the ship was too heavy to use the Suez Canal.
The vessel was one of four found to be involved in shipping Iranian fuel oil in violation of US sanctions by a Reuters investigation earlier this year.
Its seizure will further inflame the difficult relationship between Britain and Tehran, which has clashed recently over the fate of jailed dual national Nazanin Zag read more

Iranian military commanders warned it will be their “duty” to respond in kind following the dramatic swoop yesterday on 300,000-tonne vessel Grace 1. Grace 1 is believed to have been transporting oil from Iran to a refinery in Syria, flaunting international sanctions.  Royal Marines used helicopters and fast attack boats to capture the vessel – flagged to Panama – in a dramatic operation.  Revolutionary Guard commander Mohsen Rezai however threatened to seize a British tanker in response. Taking to Twitter, he said: “If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the Iranian authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker.” Tehran authorities also summonded the British ambassador to answer for the incident which they have branded “piracy”.     Royal Marines were hailed for the “brave” and “bold” operation to seize the tanker suspected of carrying oil destined for the cruel regime of Bashar al-Assad.  The marines worked alongside the authorities in Gibraltar to detain the Grace 1, which was believed to be heading to the Banyas refinery in breach of European Union sanctions. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the swift action by the authorities on the Rock and the Royal Marines would deny valuable resources to Assad’s “murderous regime”. The marines were brought in to use their specialist boarding skills to help ensure the Royal Gibraltar Police could gain access to the tanker at sea.    The first marines onto the vessel descended on ropes from a Wildcat helicopter, while others were in rigid inflatable boats – around 16 Royal Gibraltar Police officers were also involved in the mission. The British ambassador to Tehran met with Iranian ministry of foreign affairs officials on Thursday afternoon after being summoned by Iran, it is understood. He was to reiterate the UK’s backing of the firm actions taken by Gibraltar in enforcing the sanctions. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi reportedly told Iranian state TV that the ambassador was summoned over the “illegal seizure” of the tanker. Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo praised the “brave men and women” of the Royal Marines, the Royal Gibraltar Police, HM Customs Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Port Authority for their work in securing the detention of the vessel and its cargo. Mr Hunt congratulated those involved in the “bold move to enforce Syria sanctions”.    Mr Picardo said: “In the early hours of this morning, Gibraltar port and law enforcement agencies, assisted by a detachment of Royal Marines, boarded a supertanker carrying crude oil to Syria. “We have detained the vessel and its cargo. This action arose from information giving the Gibraltar government reasonable grounds to believe that the vessel, the Grace 1, was acting in breach of EU sanctions against Syria. “In fact we have reason to believe that the Grace 1 was carrying its shipment of crude oil to the Banyas refinery in Syria.” The EU has imposed a series of sanctions against Assad’s regime in Syria i read more

Iran threatens to retaliate after British forces seized oil tanker [Full article from New York Post]

A senior official in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said Friday it would be the Islamic Republic’s “duty” to seize a British oil tanker in retaliation for the capture of an Iranian ship in Gibraltar by the Royal Marines.
British forces seized the supertanker Grace 1 on Thursday for trying to take oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions, according to the UK’s Telegraph.
“If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the (Iranian) authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker,” Maj. Gen. Mohsen Rezaei said in a tweet.
The Iranian foreign ministry also demanded that Britain immediately release the tanker, accusing London of acting at Washington’s bidding.
A senior ministry official “described the UK move as unacceptable” in a meeting with British Ambassador Rob Macaire, the ministry said in a statement Friday.
He “called for the immediate release of the oil tanker, given that it has been seized at the request of the US, based on the information currently available,” the statement said.
US national security adviser John Bolton applauded the ship’s interception.
“Excellent news: UK has detained the supertanker Grace I laden with Iranian oil bound for Syria in violation of EU sanctions,” he said in a tweet.

So… again more nonsense with regards to Iran. This time the UK for whatever reason seized an oil tanker. Then they say oh look it’s containing oil! Well no shit! So that’s a surprise now apparently. The Iranian government has been giving oil to Syria for years now. But for whatever reason now that is a problem. The Syrian sanction with regards to oil has never been enforced… until now. Now Iran is threatening retaliation by seizing a UK oil tanker. What could possibly go wrong…

Iran summoned the British ambassador in Tehran over the “illegal seizure” of an Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar on Thursday. British Royal Marines seized an oil tanker in Gibraltar on Thursday accused of bringing oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions, a dramatic step that could escalate confrontation between the West and Iran.

Footage of a British oil tanker seized by Iran has been released on Iranian state television.

Iranian officials initially claimed the Stena Impero violated international maritime regulations after ramming a shipping vessel, but now say the vessel was seized in retaliation to the earlier seizure of an Iranian vessel in the Mediterranean.

Days after the UK – at US request – seized a tanker filled with Iranian oil near Gibraltar, a UK tanker in the Persian Gulf has made an abrupt u-turn and abandoned its mission to transport Iraqi oil to Europe. Now sheltering in Saudi waters, the tanker fears a tit-for-tat Iranian retaliation. Is this a case of “unintended consequences” for the US-engineered July 4th Iran tanker seizure? How far will this escalate?
