The worst affected place was Bergamo. It was overwhelmed first by the virus, then by death, then grief.
Now the worst is over, there is a sense, among bereft families, of anger – that Italy’s lockdown didn’t start soon enough.

The Greek tourist season will kick off next month, with international charter flights to popular locations resuming in July, the prime minster says.
“The tourism period begins on 15 June, when seasonal hotels can reopen,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a televised address on Wednesday.
“Let us make this summer the epilogue of the [Covid-19] crisis,” he added.
The coronavirus pandemic threatens to ruin Greece’s tourism industry, which is vital to the country’s economy.
Parents around the country are freaking out after Dr. Anthony Fauci warned during his Senate testimony that without a vaccine, schools may not reopen for the beginning of the fall semester. Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease expert, said that even at the accelerated pace vaccine development has been moving, those hopeful for a working vaccine by September ought to curb their expectations. Plus, some movie theaters will be allowed to open this summer likely won’t have many new films to screen.
On Wednesday British Columbia Premier John Horgan along with provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix announced how the province will begin to reopen the economy starting in mid-May.
Among those businesses slated to reopen in mid-May are certain health services, retail outlets, restaurants, salons and museums.
Hotels, resorts and parks could begin reopening in June while some entertainment venues would be slated for reopening in July. However, large concerts would not be included in this.
Singapore may lift its circuit breaker when community cases fall to zero or single digits over a sustained period, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said in Parliament on Monday (May 4) in a ministerial statement on the COVID-19 pandemic. “For any reopening of our borders, we are likely to start small and selectively, and to continue to impose a mix of isolation and test requirements, to protect ourselves from new imported cases leading to community spread,” he said. Priority will be given to students from the graduating cohort taking national examinations and those who require school facilities for their coursework and practical sessions.

Donald Trump called the Iranian general killed in a U.S. airstrike outside Baghdad’s airport the “number one terrorist” in the world and said he was planning attacks against U.S. diplomats and service members.
“Last night at my direction the United States military successfully executed a flawless precision strike that killed the number one terrorist anywhere in the world,” Trump said Friday in a statement at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
Qassem Soleimani died along with a local Iraqi militia leader in the strike, which followed attacks on a U.S. military base in Iraq and the U.S. embassy in Baghdad by forces the U.S. says were directed by Iran. Soleimani had been planning “imminent and sinister attacks on American diplomats and military personnel,” Trump said.
