An Iranian official has threatened to seize a British oil tanker if a detained Iranian ship is not released. Mohsen Rezaee, a member of a council that advises Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, said that Iran would respond to bullies “without hesitation”. Britain seized the Iranian oil tanker for trying to take oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions. #sutathu,#iran,#britishoiltanker,#world

British Royal Marines seized the supertanker Grace 1 on Thursday, accusing it of trying to take oil to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions. But this dramatic step has infuriated Iran, threatening to escalate confrontations with the West. Mohsen Rezai, a senior commander in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards said in a tweet: “If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the (Iranian) authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker.” He added: “Islamic Iran in its 40-year history has never initiated hostilities in any battles but has also never hesitated in responding to bullies.” Tehran had summoned the British ambassador to voice “its very strong objection to the illegal and unacceptable seizure” of its ship. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the Iranian oil tanker was carrying crude oil from Iran, according to the state news agency IRNA. Gibraltar said it had reasonable grounds to believe the Grace 1 was carrying crude oil to the Baniyas refinery in Syria. The Grace 1 was impounded off the coast of Gibraltar after sailing around Africa – the longer route from the Middle East to the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea The EU has had sanctions in place for nearly a decade that restrict oil sales to Syria. Europe does not have broad sanctions in place against Iran, but the US does, forcing Tehran into mainstream markets to look for unconventional outlets to sell oil. But Spain also reignited its war of words with Britain over sovereignty in Gibraltar following the seizure of the tanker. Acting Foreign Minister Josep Borrell has claimed Gibraltar detained the supertanker Grace 1 after a request by the US to Britain. Mr Borrell, who is set to take over as the EU’s foreign policy chief, said the Spanish Government had been kept informed about the seizure. But he added they would look at whether it violated its territorial water claims. Spain does not recognise Britain’s sovereignty over Gibraltar, which dates all the way back to a 1713 treaty. Mr Borrell said, according to the Europa Press news agency: “We’re looking at which way this affects our sovereignty, in as far as it took place in waters whose sovereignty we understand to belong to Spain. This is a breaking story. More to follow. read more

A Royal Navy ship reportedly aimed its guns at Iranian boats after they attempted to seize a British oil tanker.  HMS Montrose was escorting the British Heritage tanker through the Persian Gulf when the stand-off with five Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats took place on Wednesday, according to CNN.  It is claimed the boats told the tanker to change course and enter Iran’s territorial waters, with a US aircraft recording the incident.  HMS Montrose, which was trailing the tanker, then trained its guns on the Iranian vessels and warned them to back off.  The Iranian boats obeyed the frigate’s instructions, which were issued over the radio.  One US official told Reuters: “The Royal Navy HMS Montrose, which was also there, pointed its guns at the boats and warned them over radio, at which point they dispersed.”  Another official added: “It was harassment and an attempt to interfere with the passage.”  Britain’s Ministry of Defence had no immediate comment.  Thirty British commandos stormed an Iranian oil tanker bound for Syria last week, prompting Iran’s President to threaten the UK with retaliatory action.  Speaking on state television on Wednesday, President Hassan Rouhani said: “You (Britain) are the initiator of insecurity and you will realise the consequences later.  “Now you are so hopeless that, when one of your tankers wants to move in the region, you have to bring your frigates (to escort it) because you are scared. Then why do you commit such acts (seizure)? You should instead allow navigation to be safe.”  Iran was accused of attacks on six tankers either in or near the Strait of Hormuz in the last few months.  The US and Saudi Arabia, its major ally in the Middle East, blamed Iran for the incidents, although Tehran denied responsibility.  Tensions between Iran and the US increased last month when the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shot down an American drone. read more

senior Iranian official has threatened to seize a British oil tanker in retaliation for the United Kingdom’s boarding and seizure of the Iranian supertanker Grace 1 off the coast of Gibraltar over suspected sanctions violations yesterday. The incident comes as Iran says it will begin enriching uranium in violation a controversial international agreement that the United Kingdom, along with France and Germany, have been struggling to salvage after the U.S. government pulled out last year. It also follows a spate of attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and as tensions between the United States and Iran have pushed those two countries worryingly close to open conflict. read more
