A tit-for-tat response against the U.K. is coming from an Iranian official. Melissa Duggan on the threat that follows the seizure of an oil tanker suspected of carrying Iranian oil to Syria.

An Iranian official has threatened to seize a British oil tanker if a detained Iranian ship is not released. Mohsen Rezaee, a member of a council that advises Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, said that Iran would respond to bullies “without hesitation”. Iran has warned Britain that it should be “scared” of retaliation after Royal Marines seized an oil supertanker in Gibraltar.  “I am openly saying that Britain should be scared of Iran’s retaliatory measures over the illegal seizure of the Iranian oil tanker,” said cleric Mohammad Ali Mousavi Jazayeri.  The comments came after the UK-flagged Pacific Voyager tanker was mysteriously halted in the Persian Gulf early on Saturday – but was later confirmed to be “safe and well”.  The ship was stopped as part of a routine procedure to adjust its arrival time at its next port of call, a UK Marine Trade Operations official said.  The UKMTO, which coordinates shipping in the Gulf, had been in direct contact with the vessel, the official said.  Iran earlier dismissed “fabricated” reports that the ship had been seized by its Revolutionary Guard forces.  “We have shown that we will never remain silent against bullying …As we gave a staunch response to the American drone, the appropriate response to this illegal capture (of the tanker) will be given by Iran as well,” he said.  British Royal Marines seized the supertanker Grace 1 on Thursday for trying to take oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions in a move which drew Tehran’s fury and could escalate its confrontation with the West.  A Gibraltar spokesman said the 28-member crew, who have remained on board the supertanker, were mainly Indians with some Pakistanis and Ukrainians.  Police and customs officials remained on board the vessel to carry out their investigation, but the Royal Marines were no longer present.  Iran downed a U.S. military drone on June 20 that it said was flying over one of its southern provinces on the Gulf.  Washington said the drone was shot down over international waters.  An Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander threatened on Friday to seize a British ship in retaliation for the capture of an Iranian supertanker by Royal Marines. read more

British Royal Marines seized the supertanker Grace 1 on Thursday, accusing it of trying to take oil to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions. But this dramatic step has infuriated Iran, threatening to escalate confrontations with the West. Mohsen Rezai, a senior commander in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards said in a tweet: “If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the (Iranian) authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker.” He added: “Islamic Iran in its 40-year history has never initiated hostilities in any battles but has also never hesitated in responding to bullies.” Tehran had summoned the British ambassador to voice “its very strong objection to the illegal and unacceptable seizure” of its ship. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the Iranian oil tanker was carrying crude oil from Iran, according to the state news agency IRNA. Gibraltar said it had reasonable grounds to believe the Grace 1 was carrying crude oil to the Baniyas refinery in Syria. The Grace 1 was impounded off the coast of Gibraltar after sailing around Africa – the longer route from the Middle East to the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea The EU has had sanctions in place for nearly a decade that restrict oil sales to Syria. Europe does not have broad sanctions in place against Iran, but the US does, forcing Tehran into mainstream markets to look for unconventional outlets to sell oil. But Spain also reignited its war of words with Britain over sovereignty in Gibraltar following the seizure of the tanker. Acting Foreign Minister Josep Borrell has claimed Gibraltar detained the supertanker Grace 1 after a request by the US to Britain. Mr Borrell, who is set to take over as the EU’s foreign policy chief, said the Spanish Government had been kept informed about the seizure. But he added they would look at whether it violated its territorial water claims. Spain does not recognise Britain’s sovereignty over Gibraltar, which dates all the way back to a 1713 treaty. Mr Borrell said, according to the Europa Press news agency: “We’re looking at which way this affects our sovereignty, in as far as it took place in waters whose sovereignty we understand to belong to Spain. This is a breaking story. Britain has been plunged into a diplomatic row with Iran after Royal Marines seized an Iranian oil tanker as it passed through the Strait of Gibraltar, in a move likely to further inflame tensions in the Gulf.
The Grace 1 supertanker was boarded in the early hours of Thursday (Thursday afternoon NZ time) to prevent it from delivering a cargo of crude oil to Syria in defiance of EU sanctions, apparently following a request to the UK from the US.
The move provoked fury in Iran, which accused Britain of bowing to US pressure to blockade its oil exports and summoned the British ambassador to the foreign ministry in Tehran to express “its very strong objection to the illegal and unacceptable seizure” of the 1080-foot (329-metre) vessel.
Abbas Moussavi, a spokesman, called the move “destructive” and said it could increase tensions in the Persian Gulf, where six oil tankers have suffered attacks that Britain and the US have blamed on Iran.

A specialist team from the Royal Marines’ maritime operations unit swooped as the vessel paused to take on supplies off Gibraltar overnight.
The 30 commandos boarded the ship by abseiling from a Wildcat helicopter and climbing aboard from a Pacific 24 high-speed boat, allowing 16 Royal Gibraltar Police officers to search the vessel in a safe manner.
The operation was over in minutes with no shots fired. Fabian Picardo, Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, said he authorised the assault because he believed the ship was bound for the Baniyas refinery in Syria.
Josep Borrell, Spain’s foreign minister, said Britain had acted at the request of the US. Borrell added that Madrid was assessing the implications of the incident because it took place in waters it considers its own.
Britain’s Foreign Office said Rob Macaire, the UK ambassador in Tehran, told the foreign ministry that the move was about enforcing sanctions on Syria, not on Iran, and that Britain views Iranian oil exports in general as legitimate.
Lloyd’s List, the shipping publication, said the 300,000-ton, Panamanian-flagged tanker loaded oil off Iran in April before sailing around the Cape of Good Hope, a lengthy route apparently taken because the ship was too heavy to use the Suez Canal.
The vessel was one of four found to be involved in shipping Iranian fuel oil in violation of US sanctions by a Reuters investigation earlier this year.
Its seizure will further inflame the difficult relationship between Britain and Tehran, which has clashed recently over the fate of jailed dual national Nazanin Zag read more

Iranian military commanders warned it will be their “duty” to respond in kind following the dramatic swoop yesterday on 300,000-tonne vessel Grace 1. Grace 1 is believed to have been transporting oil from Iran to a refinery in Syria, flaunting international sanctions.  Royal Marines used helicopters and fast attack boats to capture the vessel – flagged to Panama – in a dramatic operation.  Revolutionary Guard commander Mohsen Rezai however threatened to seize a British tanker in response. Taking to Twitter, he said: “If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the Iranian authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker.” Tehran authorities also summonded the British ambassador to answer for the incident which they have branded “piracy”.     Royal Marines were hailed for the “brave” and “bold” operation to seize the tanker suspected of carrying oil destined for the cruel regime of Bashar al-Assad.  The marines worked alongside the authorities in Gibraltar to detain the Grace 1, which was believed to be heading to the Banyas refinery in breach of European Union sanctions. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the swift action by the authorities on the Rock and the Royal Marines would deny valuable resources to Assad’s “murderous regime”. The marines were brought in to use their specialist boarding skills to help ensure the Royal Gibraltar Police could gain access to the tanker at sea.    The first marines onto the vessel descended on ropes from a Wildcat helicopter, while others were in rigid inflatable boats – around 16 Royal Gibraltar Police officers were also involved in the mission. The British ambassador to Tehran met with Iranian ministry of foreign affairs officials on Thursday afternoon after being summoned by Iran, it is understood. He was to reiterate the UK’s backing of the firm actions taken by Gibraltar in enforcing the sanctions. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi reportedly told Iranian state TV that the ambassador was summoned over the “illegal seizure” of the tanker. Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo praised the “brave men and women” of the Royal Marines, the Royal Gibraltar Police, HM Customs Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Port Authority for their work in securing the detention of the vessel and its cargo. Mr Hunt congratulated those involved in the “bold move to enforce Syria sanctions”.    Mr Picardo said: “In the early hours of this morning, Gibraltar port and law enforcement agencies, assisted by a detachment of Royal Marines, boarded a supertanker carrying crude oil to Syria. “We have detained the vessel and its cargo. This action arose from information giving the Gibraltar government reasonable grounds to believe that the vessel, the Grace 1, was acting in breach of EU sanctions against Syria. “In fact we have reason to believe that the Grace 1 was carrying its shipment of crude oil to the Banyas refinery in Syria.” The EU has imposed a series of sanctions against Assad’s regime in Syria i read more

A Royal Navy ship reportedly aimed its guns at Iranian boats after they attempted to seize a British oil tanker.  HMS Montrose was escorting the British Heritage tanker through the Persian Gulf when the stand-off with five Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats took place on Wednesday, according to CNN.  It is claimed the boats told the tanker to change course and enter Iran’s territorial waters, with a US aircraft recording the incident.  HMS Montrose, which was trailing the tanker, then trained its guns on the Iranian vessels and warned them to back off.  The Iranian boats obeyed the frigate’s instructions, which were issued over the radio.  One US official told Reuters: “The Royal Navy HMS Montrose, which was also there, pointed its guns at the boats and warned them over radio, at which point they dispersed.”  Another official added: “It was harassment and an attempt to interfere with the passage.”  Britain’s Ministry of Defence had no immediate comment.  Thirty British commandos stormed an Iranian oil tanker bound for Syria last week, prompting Iran’s President to threaten the UK with retaliatory action.  Speaking on state television on Wednesday, President Hassan Rouhani said: “You (Britain) are the initiator of insecurity and you will realise the consequences later.  “Now you are so hopeless that, when one of your tankers wants to move in the region, you have to bring your frigates (to escort it) because you are scared. Then why do you commit such acts (seizure)? You should instead allow navigation to be safe.”  Iran was accused of attacks on six tankers either in or near the Strait of Hormuz in the last few months.  The US and Saudi Arabia, its major ally in the Middle East, blamed Iran for the incidents, although Tehran denied responsibility.  Tensions between Iran and the US increased last month when the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shot down an American drone. read more
