An American Pickle is a 2020 American comedy-drama film directed by Brandon Trost (in his solo directorial debut) and written by Simon Rich, based on his 2013 short story “Sell Out”.[3] The film stars Seth Rogen as a Jewish immigrant who gets preserved in a vat of pickles and wakes up in modern-day New York City, attempting to fit in with the assistance of his last remaining descendant (also played by Rogen). Sarah Snook also stars.

Originally intended to be released by Sony Pictures, the film’s rights were sold to Warner Bros. in April 2020. It was digitally released in the United States on August 6, 2020, the first original film released by HBO Max, and theatrically in several overseas countries. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with Rogen’s dual performance being praised. read more

Seth Rogen leads An American Pickle as not one, but two characters. First we meet Herschel Greenbaum who immigrates to America in 1919. He’s determined to do whatever it takes to make sure his family becomes a success, but then he falls into a pickle vat and winds up being preserved by the brine for 100 years. When he reemerges in the present day, he goes to live with his great grandson, the very tech-savvy Ben, also played by Rogen.

Check out this video interview to hear about Rogen’s unique experience making An American Pickle, his insistence on using his real beard to play Herschel, the beep system needed to ensure Ben’s reactions to Herschel were timed properly and more. An American Pickle arrives on HBO Max on August 6th! read more

In the new HBO Max movie “An American Pickle,” Seth Rogen plays an immigrant worker preserved in brine for 100 years who emerges in contemporary Brooklyn to meet his own descendant. Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth
You pull on your finger, then another finger, then cigarette
The wall-to-wall is calling, it lingers, then you forget
Oh, you’re a rock ‘n’ roll suicide
You’re too old to lose it, too young to choose it
And the clock waits so patiently on your song
You walk past a cafe, but you don’t eat when you’ve lived too long
Oh, no, no, no, you’re a rock ‘n’ roll suicide
Chev brakes are snarling as you stumble across the road
But the day breaks instead, so you hurry home
Don’t let the sun blast your shadow
Don’t let the milk float ride your mind
You’re so natural, religiously unkind
Oh no, love, you’re not alone
You’re watching yourself, but you’re too unfair
You got your head all tangled up, but if I could only make you… read more

With some comedies, the laughs start with the title and absurd premise.

Take “An American Pickle,” which features Seth Rogen in dual leading roles as 1920s immigrant Herschel Greenbaum, who is brined alive for 100 years after falling into a factory vat of pickles and re-emerges in 2020 to live with his Brooklynite app developer great-grandson Ben.

“There was a real sense from people I know that thought maybe it was a joke and not an actual movie that we were spending huge amounts of time and energy working on,” says Rogen, whose “Pickle” will silence skeptics. The film is bypassing a theatrical release to stream on HBO Max (Aug. 6, with a trailer that dropped Friday). “It was in fact real. So I’m excited to show it to people.” read more
