Speaking outside his Ottawa residence, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday that businesses facing a rent crunch will need to hold on through the COVID-19 pandemic and help with an eventual economic recovery, instead of closing up and slowing the rebound.
He said the government “really hopes” commercial landlords will apply for a federal program launching next week that would give companies a break on the rent, warning that they may find themselves out of cash in the future if they evict tenants now.

HOUSE DEBATES $3 TRILLION RELIEF BILL: The House of Representatives meets to debate and vote on the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act, or HEROES Act. The bill includes $200 billion for hazard pay for front-line health care workers, $75 billion to expand COVID-19 testing, and allocates funding for state and local governments whose budgets have been walloped by shortfalls in tax revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic. The bill also includes up to $10,000 in student loan forgiveness and a new round of $1,200 stimulus payments. ‘The American people are worth it,’ House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said of the spending to the Associated Press. It is expected to pass in the House, but struggle in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has called the effort to help millions of struggling Americans a ‘totally unserious effort.’

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announces new rental waivers and deferrals for commercial tenants hit by the impact of the coronavirus crisis.
Under the scheme landlords will have to reduce leases in proportion to the reduction in the tenant’s business. The waivers will have to account for at least 50 per cent of the reduction in business.

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law the CARES Act, a massive $2 trillion USD bailout intended to mitigate the economic impacts of COVID-19 on the United States economy.
The legislation will ship payments of up to $1,200 to millions of Americans, bolster unemployment benefits, offer loans, grants and tax breaks to businesses large and small and flush billions more to states, local governments and the nation’s all but overwhelmed health care system.
The House approved the sweeping measure by a voice vote, as strong majorities of both parties lined up behind the most colossal economic relief bill in the nation’s history.
