Joaquin Phoenix took home the Golden Globe on Sunday night for his role in “Joker,” but not without some drama.
After acknowledging his fellow nominees, Phoenix, a long-time skeptic of Hollywood awards shows, said “There is no f—ing best actor.” NBC proceed to cut out the audio as he appeared to drop multiple f-bombs, all of which were muted for viewers.

The X-Men franchise has been running for nearly two decades, and it all culminates with Dark Phoenix, a storyline that the movies already covered in 2006. Once again, Jean Grey goes absolutely bonkers with power, but this time Wolverine isn’t around to stab her. The movie has a pretty awful score on Rotten Tomatoes and definitely raises a lot of questions. Like what’s the deal with the aliens, are they bulletproof or not? Why was Quicksilver dismissed from the movie so quickly? What was up with that Phoenix moment in X-Men Apocalypse? Why do these movies keep jumping forward a decade each time? Is Magneto supposed to be 62 years old, and if so, why is a 42-year-old with no make-up playing him? Why did they show Mystique dying in the trailer?
Dark Phoenix ended an era for the X-Men franchise, and unfortunately, it didn’t end on a high note. From rotten reviews to disappointing box office receipts, this superhero sequel is far from super, and the writing was on the wall long before it arrived in theaters. Here’s a spoiler-filled look at why Dark Phoenix bombed.
In late January 2019, Dark Phoenix’s test screenings bombed dramatically. 20th Century Fox knew they had to fix it. But in spite of extensive reshoots, including major changes to the climax because of perceived similarities to the ending of another superhero film, critics still savaged Dark Phoenix, which earned a Rotten Tomatoes score so low, it’s on par with disasters like 2015’s Fantastic Four, 2004’s Catwoman, and the Titanic, not the movie, the actual ship. Brian Tallerico at RogerEbert.com summed things up, simply calling the film, “… a joyless, lifeless, boring affair.”

It’s been nearly 20 years since the X-Men franchise began back in 2000, almost single-handedly kicking off this whole superhero blockbuster craze. Over the course of two decades, there have been a lot of X-movies — some good, some bad, all pretty weird in one way or another. X-Men: Dark Phoenix is, by all appearances, the final installment in this incarnation of the franchise, and it goes out with a sense of finality and closure. Unlike the Phoenix referred to in the film’s title, it’s pretty much guaranteed that none of these specific characters or storylines will be picked up in a future film. If you’re hoping for a sequel to come along and elaborate on any of the dangling plot threads, you’re out of luck, friend.
