The House of Representatives voted to pass the largest relief package in U.S. history on Friday evening, but the $3 trillion bill faces an uphill battle in the Senate and White House. The number of deaths among Covid-19 patients in UK hospitals has risen past 22,000.

A further 445 deaths were reported by NHS England, taking the total to 19,740.

A total of 73 new deaths in Wales brought the total there to 886. The toll in Scotland rose to 1,415 after 83 new deaths were announced.

The 601 new deaths brings the total across those three NHS bodies to 22,041.

More than 20,000 people have now died in hospital in the UK after becoming infected with coronavirus. The government described it as “a tragic and terrible milestone”.

The number doesn’t included deaths in care homes or the community in England and Northern Ireland.

Previously the government’s chief scientific adviser had said that keeping deaths below 20,000 would be “a good outcome”.

Meanwhile Downing Street has announced that the Prime Minister Boris Johnson will return to work on Monday. It’s three weeks since he was admitted to intensive care suffering from the coronavirus infection. read more

Some businesses in Georgia that were forced to close due to the deadly coronavirus outbreak are now allowed to reopen, despite the coronavirus death toll in the U.S. exceeding 50,000. This comes as President Donald Trump said his comments about using disinfectant for internal use in COVID-19 patients was “sarcastic.” He later made brief comments at Friday’s coronavirus task force briefing and then left without taking questions. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke in the House of Commons on Saturday as the government passed a wage subsidy bill to help mitigate the economic impact of the novel coronavirus.

The Trudeau government struck the deal with opposition parties to swiftly approve a massive $73-billion wage subsidy program aimed at helping businesses and workers survive the economic ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Passage of legislation needed to implement the program was assured Saturday after Conservatives dropped their attempt to tie the bill to the longer-term question of how Parliament should function in the midst of a national health crisis. read more

The US has become the first country in the world to record more than 2,000 coronavirus deaths in a single day.

Figures from Johns Hopkins University show 2,108 people died in the past 24 hours while there are now more than half a million confirmed infections.

The US could soon surpass Italy as the country with the most coronavirus deaths worldwide.

But experts on the White House Covid-19 task force say the outbreak is starting to level off across the US.

Dr Deborah Birx said there were good signs the outbreak was stabilising, but cautioned: “As encouraging as they are, we have not reached the peak.” read more

B.C. provincial chief health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry confirmed on Tuesday that there were five new deaths from COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 24.

Henry said that while 43 new cases of the virus brought the total to more than 1,000, more than 50 per cent of cases – or 507 people – had recovered.

Of the remaining 482 active cases, 128 are in hospital and 61 in intensive care.
