World Health Organization officials are holding a press conference to update the public on the coronavirus outbreak, which has infected more than 732,000 people across the globe. On Friday, WHO officials said the first patients have been enrolled for a “historic” drug trial to test treatments for the coronavirus. There are no proven therapies yet for the coronavirus, which has killed at least 34,600 people across the globe.

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw, along with Premier Jason Kenney, provided an update on the province’s COVID-19 situation. It was announced that the province has ordered all non-essential businesses to close due to the pandemic.

The provincial government announced some big changes Friday as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 542 in Alberta.

Kenney said the restriction on mass gatherings was being tightened. People can no longer gather in groups of under 50; they must be smaller than 15. That includes indoor and outdoor events, the premier said, like weddings and funerals. He also stressed the two-metre social distancing rule must be observed. read more

The U.S. has reached a grim milestone with over 1,000 dead because of the coronavirus pandemic, as Dr. Anthony Fauci warns that a second wave of the virus could be possible. However, Dr. David Agus says that current social distancing efforts are working, and claims the country will be prepared for any future outbreaks. There is new evidence that loss of smell (anosmia) may be an indicator of COVD-19 infection. New reports also suggest that COVID-19 may cause conjunctivitis (pink eye), and be potentially spread through contact with the conjunctiva. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo holds a news conference to provide an update on the coronavirus outbreak impacting the state. He called on President Donald Trump on Tuesday to use the Defense Production Act to secure more medical equipment and asked Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar to release the 20,000 ventilators in the U.S. stockpile to New York.
