HOUSE DEBATES $3 TRILLION RELIEF BILL: The House of Representatives meets to debate and vote on the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act, or HEROES Act. The bill includes $200 billion for hazard pay for front-line health care workers, $75 billion to expand COVID-19 testing, and allocates funding for state and local governments whose budgets have been walloped by shortfalls in tax revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic. The bill also includes up to $10,000 in student loan forgiveness and a new round of $1,200 stimulus payments. ‘The American people are worth it,’ House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said of the spending to the Associated Press. It is expected to pass in the House, but struggle in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has called the effort to help millions of struggling Americans a ‘totally unserious effort.’
HAPPENING NOW—CUOMO UPDATE: Gov. Andrew Cuomo delivers updates on New York’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Yesterday the governor signed an executive order that gives him the authority to extend the ‘NY on PAUSE’ order through June 6, though he has yet to actually change the date that is currently set for May 15. When explaining this decision, Cuomo told the press that he will reassess the state’s situation this coming Friday, and he’ll then decide whether or not the statewide order will actually be extended. The governor explained that ‘there’s no doubt that this is a terrible period, but we have to get through it. If we make a mistake and we act too quickly the situation is only going to get worse and it’s only going to get longer.’

BORIS JOHNSON GIVES COVID-19 UPDATE: Prime Minister Boris Johnson speaks from Downing Street to address the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. Johnson is expected to reveal a ‘roadmap’ for how to ‘unlock the various parts of the UK economy,’ as the nation has been under a lockdown order for seven weeks. Though hesitant to ease any major social distancing guidelines, Johnson is hoping to find a way to restart some of the economy, let people travel for work, and have students return to school safely. Part of this plan would require people to wear facemasks in public to give people ‘confidence that they can go back to work.’ There are 220,500 coronavirus cases throughout the UK and almost 32,00 people have died— more than any other country in Europe.

Cuomo announced yesterday that the state had another decrease in their daily death toll, reporting 540 coronavirus deaths in a single day, down from 630 just a day earlier.
