Montreal Mayor ValĆ©rie Plante and regional public health director MylĆØne Drouin provide an update on Thursday on the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The mayor announced new measures that will be put in place to support Montreal merchants as they reopen businesses on Monday, May 25th.

The date for reopening was pushed back to May 25 in the Greater Montreal area after the government deemed the required criteria to safely reopen had not been met.

Montreal’s regional director of health Dre. MylĆØne Drouin provided the daily update on the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednseday.

Dr. Drouin announced a total of 2090 cases of COVID-19 in Montreal, with 132 hospitalizations and 26 cases in intensive care.

She said that public health expects more cases to be announced in the coming days as they were dealing with a backlog in the labs in the past few days.

The City of Montreal declared a state of emergency Friday afternoon as the number of cases of COVID-19 jumped to 971, representing 48 per cent of cases in the province.

Montreal Mayor ValĆ©rie Plante said the decision was made at the request of Quebecā€™s public health director Dr. Horacio Arruda.

Earlier in the day, the Quebec government announced 10 more deaths as a result of the novel coronavirus, bringing the total number of fatalities to 18.
