Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Wednesday that his government is investing a $150 million in funding to improve broadband and cellular connectivity in Ontario.
Ford said this money will go directly to expanding broadband and cellular access to more families and businesses in rural Ontario.
Ford added that his government is partnering with municipalities, Indigenous communities and private sectors to deliver those critical projects.
However, the premier called on the federal government for support and to “deliver on its commitment” to broadband accessibility, because “we can’t do it alone.”

More than 5 million people are now known to have contracted the coronavirus. New infections are easing in Europe and the US, but experts say a second wave is inevitable. New cases are surging in Latin America. Brazil, which reported the continent’s first case back in February, is seeing the most new cases. On Wednesday alone, the country recorded almost 20,000 new infections. If the trend continues, its likely that Brazil could soon have the second-highest number of cases in the world.
Turkey’s economy was in trouble before the coronavirus outbreak and its economic fallout hit the country. The Turkish lira has tumbled against the dollar and central bank interventions aren’t helping much.
Some of today’s other coronavirus developments:
– The Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, has issued a total ban on hunting, breeding and eating wild animals. Research suggests the virus is most likely spread from wild animals to humans through such practices.
– A top US scientist has said people should not count on a vaccine being developed soon. William Haseltine says the best approach is to manage the spread of the virus through contact tracing and strict isolation measures amid fresh outbreaks.
– Iran’s deputy health minister says some TEN THOUSAND health workers have been infected with the virus.
– A meat processing plant in the Netherlands has been closed – after some 45 employees tested positive for the COVID-19. It’s the latest in a number of large outbreaks in slaughterhouses.

A further 3.2 million Americans sought unemployment benefits last week as the economic toll from the coronavirus pandemic continued to mount.
The new applications brought the total number of jobless claims since mid-March to 33.3 million- or about 20% of the US workforce.
The number of new claims reported each week by the Department of Labor has subsided since hitting a peak of 6.9 million in March.
But they remain extraordinarily high.
And the number of people collecting benefits has continued to rise, despite recent moves to start re-opening in some parts of the country.
Almost half of American states are loosening restrictions and reopening some businesses. But health officials warn reopening too quickly could backfire. CGTN’s Jim Spellman has more.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said Friday that 5.1 million people in the country have been tested for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
Pence was joined by U.S. President Donald Trump and Stephen Hahn, head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for a daily briefing on the governmentās response to the pandemic.
Earlier in the day, Trump addressed comments he made Thursday in which he floated the idea of injecting disinfectant or shining light inside the body to kill the virus. He claimed he was being āsarcasticā when he made the statements.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford was joined by Health Minister Christine Elliott, Ross Romano, minister of colleges and universities, and Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, minister of long-term care on Saturday to announce that the province would be investing $20 million towards āOntario-based research into COVID-19ā to help find a vaccine for the virus.
Ford said that a novel coronavirus vaccine is required to āgo back to normal,ā and that they will be funding āthe most advanced medical researchā in Ontario.

Finance Minister Rishi Sunak said without his COVID-19 economic measures aiding the UK’s businesses during the coronavirus crisis, ‘things would be a lot worse’ for the future of the UK, following the Office for Budget Responsibility’s stark prediction the UK economy will soon collapse.
A THREE-month lockdown could leave two million Brits unemployed and a 35 per cent fall to GDP, experts have predicted.
But as soon as the restrictions are lifted the economy is likely to bounce back, the Office for Budget Responsibility said.
During a Coronavirus Task Force briefing at the White House on Sunday, President Trump said more than 1.6 million Americans have had a coronavirus test.
