Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna “Gigi” Bryant were tragically killed in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020. Seven other people perished in the accident alongside the pair.
The tragedy devastated millions around the globe, but it’s the basketball star’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, who has arguably suffered the most, having lost a daughter and a husband all at once.
Amid Vanessa’s pain, she managed to put together a memorial service for the father-daughter duo on February 24th, 2020, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The mom-of-four chose this date because 2 is Gigi’s basketball jersey number, 24 is Kobe’s, and 20 signifies how many years they were married.
The Staples Center, home to the Los Angeles Lakers, was a much more somber venue on February 24th, 2020 when the arena was used to honor one of the team’s very own legends. A memorial was held for Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna “Gigi” Bryant to celebrate their lives that were taken all too soon. Kobe and Gigi died in a tragic helicopter crash, along with seven others, on January 26th in Calabasas while en route to a youth basketball tournament.
Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s wife and the mother to his four children, including 13-year-old Gigi, took the stage to deliver an emotional speech about the “most amazing husband” and their daughter’s “sweet grace,” as well as her athletic abilities. Vanessa wasn’t the only one to get in front of the crowd. Beyoncé performed “XO,” which she mentioned was one of Kobe’s favorite songs. Shaquille O’Neal drew big laughs with his sweet tribute, while Michael Jordan gave a somber speech that will likely move you to tears yourself.

Nearly one month after Kobe Bryant, Gianna Bryant and seven others were killed in a horrific helicopter crash, the Staples Center held a special public memorial to remember the victims on Feb. 24. Although only 20,000 or so people could get inside the event, thousands of others from around the world tuned into live streams to celebrate the legendary NBA star. Kobe played for the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center for 20 years before retiring in 2016, so the location was special to him and his family. The date of the memorial, 2/24, also had a special meaning, as 2 was Gianna’s basketball number and 24 was Kobe’s.
