Deputy killed, 2 other officers shot in California ambush
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California sheriff’s deputy was killed and two law enforcement officers wounded Saturday when they were ambushed with gunfire and explosives while pursuing a suspect, authorities said.
Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, 38, was shot and killed in Ben Lomond, an unincorporated area near Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Jim Hart said. A second deputy was injured, and a third officer from the California Highway Patrol was shot in his hand, Hart said.
Gutzwiller “was a beloved figure here at the sheriff’s office,” the sheriff said.
“Damon showed up today to do his job, to keep this community safe, and his life was taken needlessly,” a visibly shaken Hart said.
The suspect, Steven Carrillo, 38, was shot during his arrest and was being treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Hart said. The Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are investigating.
The deputies responded to a 911 call around 1:30 p.m. about a suspicious van. The caller said there were guns and bomb-making devices inside, Hart said.
When deputies arrived, the van pulled away and the deputies followed. The van went down a driveway at Carrillo’s home and the deputies were ambushed by gunfire and explosives after getting out of their vehicle.
Gutzwiller was wounded and later died at a hospital. Another deputy was wounded by gunfire or shrapnel and struck by a vehicle as the suspect fled.
Carrillo attempted to carjack a vehicle and was wounded while being arrested.
Hart said Carrillo was taken to the hospital for treatment and would be charged with first-degree murder.
The shooting shocked Ben Lomond, a town of about 6,000 people tucked up in the Santa Cruz mountains.
Resident Kathy Crocker brought a bouquet to the sheriff’s office as Hart gave a news conference about the shootings.
“It just breaks my heart that this keeps happening,” she said, as teary-eyed deputies entered the building.

The 64-year-old was attempting to fly 5,000ft (1,524m) into the air in a steam-powered rocket when it crash-landed shortly after take-off near Barstow on Saturday. The Science Channel, which was filming the launch attempt as part of a documentary series called Homemade Astronauts, confirmed Mr Hughes had died in the crash. “Our thoughts & prayers go out to his family & friends during this difficult time,” it said. “It was always his dream to do this launch & Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey.” Footage of the launch was posted on Twitter and showed the rocket flying into the air before plummeting to the ground seconds later. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it was investigating after officers responded to a fatal rocket crash off highway 247 in Barstow on Saturday afternoon, CNN reported. The sheriff’s office – which did not formally identify Hughes – said a man was pronounced dead when a rocket crashed in the open desert during a launch event. No other injuries were reported. Mr Hughes – who worked as a limo driver and believed the Earth was flat – eventually hoped to develop a rocket that would launch him 62 miles in the air to where the Earth’s atmosphere meets outer space, according to US reports. He made international headlines in 2018 after blasting himself around 1,875ft (570m) into the air in a rocket before landing with a bump. The daredevil reached an estimated speed of 350mph before activating his parachute during the stunt. “This thing wants to kill you 10 different ways,” Mr Hughes said at the time. Mr Hughes also set a Guinness World Record in 2002 for the longest limousine ramp jump after he jumped 31.39m (103ft) in a stretched limousine at Perris Auto Speedway in California.
It was the final flight of the “rocket man,” Mike Hughes. Moments after liftoff, his rocket plummeted to the earth, killing him instantly. ‘Mad Mike’ was a daredevil who believed the earth was flat and set out to prove it by building his own steam-powered rockets in his garage. He wanted to fly to the edge of space to see for himself. His first launch in 2018 was successful, but this time, something went terribly wrong.

Qassem Soleimani died along with a local Iraqi militia leader in the strike, which followed attacks on a U.S. military base in Iraq and the U.S. embassy in Baghdad by forces the U.S. says were directed by Iran. Soleimani had been planning “imminent and sinister attacks on American diplomats and military personnel,” Trump said.

Car Crashes Into New Jersey Building’s Second Floor, Killing Two People.Police say a car crashed into the second floor of a New Jersey business, killing its two occupants.the red 2010 Porsche Boxster hit the building at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday and lodged into the second story.The car was speeding north on Hooper Avenue, near Indian Hill, when its driver Braden DeMartin, 22, of Toms River, lost control and hit the center median, according to police. Skid marks blacken the roadway about 100 feet from where the car landed.Both DeMartin and passenger Daniel Foley, 23, of Toms River, were pronounced dead at the scene.By nightfall, crews had covered the building with a tarp while the police investigation continued its focused on the vehicle’s speed at the time of the crash
A vehicle somehow crashed into the second floor of a building in Toms River, New Jersey.
A fight that broke out when somebody jumped ahead in a line for Popeyes’ popular chicken sandwich turned deadly in Oxon Hill, Maryland, Monday night. Prince George’s County police said a 28-year-old man died after he was stabbed multiple times in the parking lot of the restaurant on Livingston Road in Oxon Hill Plaza.
“We have been able to determine that preliminarily this is related to the release of the sandwich here at this restaurant. This individual was in line, a line specifically for the sale of the sandwich, when another customer and he got into an altercation. That ended with the victim being stabbed outside of the business,” said Jennifer Donelan, spokeswoman for the police department, during a news conference.
