US President Donald Trump said he ordered the killing of Qassem Soleimani to stop a war, not start one, saying the Iranian military commander was planning imminent attacks on Americans.

“Soleimani was plotting imminent and sinister attacks on American diplomats and military personnel but we caught him in the act and terminated him,” Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

“We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war,” Trump said, adding that the United States does not seek regime change in Iran. read more

A court in the British colony of Gibraltar has ordered a seized Iranian oil tanker to be detained for an additional two weeks.

Britain has been plunged into a diplomatic row with Iran after Royal Marines seized an Iranian oil tanker as it passed through the Strait of Gibraltar, in a move likely to further inflame tensions in the Gulf.
The Grace 1 supertanker was boarded in the early hours of Thursday (Thursday afternoon NZ time) to prevent it from delivering a cargo of crude oil to Syria in defiance of EU sanctions, apparently following a request to the UK from the US.
The move provoked fury in Iran, which accused Britain of bowing to US pressure to blockade its oil exports and summoned the British ambassador to the foreign ministry in Tehran to express “its very strong objection to the illegal and unacceptable seizure” of the 1080-foot (329-metre) vessel.
Abbas Moussavi, a spokesman, called the move “destructive” and said it could increase tensions in the Persian Gulf, where six oil tankers have suffered attacks that Britain and the US have blamed on Iran.

A specialist team from the Royal Marines’ maritime operations unit swooped as the vessel paused to take on supplies off Gibraltar overnight.
The 30 commandos boarded the ship by abseiling from a Wildcat helicopter and climbing aboard from a Pacific 24 high-speed boat, allowing 16 Royal Gibraltar Police officers to search the vessel in a safe manner.
The operation was over in minutes with no shots fired. Fabian Picardo, Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, said he authorised the assault because he believed the ship was bound for the Baniyas refinery in Syria.
Josep Borrell, Spain’s foreign minister, said Britain had acted at the request of the US. Borrell added that Madrid was assessing the implications of the incident because it took place in waters it considers its own.
Britain’s Foreign Office said Rob Macaire, the UK ambassador in Tehran, told the foreign ministry that the move was about enforcing sanctions on Syria, not on Iran, and that Britain views Iranian oil exports in general as legitimate.
Lloyd’s List, the shipping publication, said the 300,000-ton, Panamanian-flagged tanker loaded oil off Iran in April before sailing around the Cape of Good Hope, a lengthy route apparently taken because the ship was too heavy to use the Suez Canal.
The vessel was one of four found to be involved in shipping Iranian fuel oil in violation of US sanctions by a Reuters investigation earlier this year.
Its seizure will further inflame the difficult relationship between Britain and Tehran, which has clashed recently over the fate of jailed dual national Nazanin Zag read more

Iranian boats ‘tried to intercept British tanker’ Armed Iranian boats are reported to have tried to intercept a British oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz – before being driven off by a Royal Navy ship.  Media reports quoting US officials said the tanker was asked to stop in Iranian waters close by, but the boats withdrew after a warning from the UK’s frigate.  Iran has been threatening to retaliate for the seizure of one of its tankers near Gibraltar last week. The Pentagon said it was aware of the reports but the MoD has not commented. According to the reports, five boats believed to belong to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps approached the British Heritage tanker as it was moving out of the Gulf.  Last week, British Royal Marines helped the authorities in Gibraltar seize an Iranian oil tanker because of evidence it was heading to Syria in breach of EU sanctions. In response, an Iranian official said a British oil tanker should be seized if its detained ship was not released.  Iran also summoned the British ambassador in Tehran to complain about what it said was a “form of piracy”. And on Wednesday Iranian President Hassan Rouhani mocked the UK, calling it “scared” and “hopeless” for using Royal Navy warships to shadow a British tanker in the Gulf. HMS Monrose had shadowed British tanker the Pacific Voyager for some of the way through the Strait of Hormuz, but that journey passed without incident. This latest row comes at a time of escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The Trump administration – which has pulled out of an international agreement on Tehran’s nuclear programme – has reinforced punishing sanctions against Iran.  Its European allies, including the UK, have not followed suit. Nonetheless, the relationship between the UK and Iran has also become increasingly strained, after Britain said the Iranian regime was “almost certainly” responsible for the attacks on two oil tankers in June. The UK has also been pressing Iran to release British-Iranian mother Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe who was jailed for five years in 2016 after being convicted for spying, which she denies. read more

A Royal Navy ship reportedly aimed its guns at Iranian boats after they attempted to seize a British oil tanker.  HMS Montrose was escorting the British Heritage tanker through the Persian Gulf when the stand-off with five Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats took place on Wednesday, according to CNN.  It is claimed the boats told the tanker to change course and enter Iran’s territorial waters, with a US aircraft recording the incident.  HMS Montrose, which was trailing the tanker, then trained its guns on the Iranian vessels and warned them to back off.  The Iranian boats obeyed the frigate’s instructions, which were issued over the radio.  One US official told Reuters: “The Royal Navy HMS Montrose, which was also there, pointed its guns at the boats and warned them over radio, at which point they dispersed.”  Another official added: “It was harassment and an attempt to interfere with the passage.”  Britain’s Ministry of Defence had no immediate comment.  Thirty British commandos stormed an Iranian oil tanker bound for Syria last week, prompting Iran’s President to threaten the UK with retaliatory action.  Speaking on state television on Wednesday, President Hassan Rouhani said: “You (Britain) are the initiator of insecurity and you will realise the consequences later.  “Now you are so hopeless that, when one of your tankers wants to move in the region, you have to bring your frigates (to escort it) because you are scared. Then why do you commit such acts (seizure)? You should instead allow navigation to be safe.”  Iran was accused of attacks on six tankers either in or near the Strait of Hormuz in the last few months.  The US and Saudi Arabia, its major ally in the Middle East, blamed Iran for the incidents, although Tehran denied responsibility.  Tensions between Iran and the US increased last month when the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shot down an American drone. read more

Iran threatens to retaliate after British forces seized oil tanker [Full article from New York Post]

A senior official in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said Friday it would be the Islamic Republic’s “duty” to seize a British oil tanker in retaliation for the capture of an Iranian ship in Gibraltar by the Royal Marines.
British forces seized the supertanker Grace 1 on Thursday for trying to take oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions, according to the UK’s Telegraph.
“If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the (Iranian) authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker,” Maj. Gen. Mohsen Rezaei said in a tweet.
The Iranian foreign ministry also demanded that Britain immediately release the tanker, accusing London of acting at Washington’s bidding.
A senior ministry official “described the UK move as unacceptable” in a meeting with British Ambassador Rob Macaire, the ministry said in a statement Friday.
He “called for the immediate release of the oil tanker, given that it has been seized at the request of the US, based on the information currently available,” the statement said.
US national security adviser John Bolton applauded the ship’s interception.
“Excellent news: UK has detained the supertanker Grace I laden with Iranian oil bound for Syria in violation of EU sanctions,” he said in a tweet.

So… again more nonsense with regards to Iran. This time the UK for whatever reason seized an oil tanker. Then they say oh look it’s containing oil! Well no shit! So that’s a surprise now apparently. The Iranian government has been giving oil to Syria for years now. But for whatever reason now that is a problem. The Syrian sanction with regards to oil has never been enforced… until now. Now Iran is threatening retaliation by seizing a UK oil tanker. What could possibly go wrong…
