COVID-19 Update 80 with Roger Seheult, MD of https://www.medcram.com who discusses the recent retractions from well-established peer-reviewed journals The Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine.
The retracted COVID 19 studies primarily focused on the efficacy and associated mortality of the medications hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, ace-inhibitors, and angiotensin receptor blockers, and relied on data from a small company called Surgisphere. The Guardian first reported about and error in the Surgisphere data set which has served to undermine the validity of these studies for many including most of the authors of the studies themselves (This video was recorded June 5, 2020).

The study concluded that hydroxychloroquine could be at best ineffective, but it could also raise the risk of death.

President Donald Trump said Monday he has been taking anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine for over a week to prevent coronavirus infection. Hydroxychloroquine, which has been repeatedly touted by Trump as a potential game-changer in fighting the coronavirus, is also often used by doctors to treat rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Numerous clinical trials are looking to see if it’s effective in fighting the coronavirus, but it is not a proven treatment yet.

A new, unpublished study found that hydroxychloroquine, a drug President Trump has cited as key in fighting coronavirus, has a higher death rate among coronavirus patients compared to those not on the drug.

You might have heard that we found a cure for the COVID-19, and that it comes from a drug we’ve used for centuries. But let’s take a breath and look at the facts.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the federal government had amassed 30 million hydroxychloroquine tablets, which he said would distributed “in large amounts” to U.S. states as they continue to deal with the impact of COVID-19.

The president has continued to promote the anti-malaria drug as a treatment for COVID-19 although scientists say more testing is needed to determine if it is safe and effective in the fight against the virus.

Trump also denied that he had any stake in companies producing hydroxychloroquine.
Trump made the comments during the daily briefing of the U.S. Coronavirus Task Force, alongside top U.S. health officials, Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. read more

US president Donald Trump has again urged Americans to try the drug hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus. Though the drug has not undergone tests to prove its effectiveness in treating the virus, Trump has continued to advocate for it, telling reporters: ‘What do you have to lose?’ Dr Anthony Fauci, the top doctor on infectious diseases in the US and a key member of the White House task force, told CBS Face the Nation program there was nothing to suggest the medicine had any benefit against coronavirus. ‘The data are really just at best suggestive. There have been cases that show there may be an effect and there are others to show there’s no effect’. When asked at the daily press briefing, Trump refused to allow Dr Fauci to answer questions about the drug’s effectiveness
