Daredevil and Flat Earth theorist Michael “Mad Mike” Hughes died Saturday in a rocket crash. Hughes, 64, wanted to prove the Flat Earth theory by taking photographs of the Earth from a homemade rocket.  Saturday’s rocket launch was to be featured on the Science Channel, which was chronicling Hughes’ attempts to launch himself high enough in a homemade rocket to take pictures of the curvature — or lack thereof as far as Hughes was concerned — of the Earth. This particular launch was only supposed to take Hughes 5,000 feet in the air, according to Discovery. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike Hughes’ family and friends during this difficult time. It was always his dream to do this launch, and Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey,” Science Channel said in a statement. Although police did not positively identify Hughes, San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Public Information Officer  Cindy Bachman said Saturday in a statement, “A man was pronounced deceased after the rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event. Medical aid was staged for the launch and was on scene immediately.”  Hughes had previously completed a successful launch in March 2018, which sent him 1,800 feet in the air.  “The Flat Earth thing is like everything else to me,” Hughes told CBS News in October 2018. “I just want people to question everything. Question what your congressman is doing, your city council. Question what really happened during the Civil War. What happened during 9/11.”  At the time, Hughes stated that he built his homemade rocket mostly through, “trial and error,” and admitted, “You don’t get a lot of second chances, though, in the rocket business.” read more

“Mad” Mike Hughes Flat-Earther to Launch Steam Rocket Today 11th August 2019

Mad” Mike Hughes — a flat-Earther, rocket builder and daredevil who previously launched himself 1,875 feet (572 meters) into the air on a homemade rocket — will attempt to launch himself again to a much higher altitude this Sunday (Aug. 11). The attempt will be filmed by the Science Channel for the upcoming new series “Homemade Astronauts.”

In March 2018, after a few failed attempts, Hughes successfully launched aboard his rocket and survived the trip, landing via parachute. The then-62-year-old Hughes walked away with some soreness and a compressed vertebra, he told Space.com. In the upcoming launch attempt, Hughes will aim for an even greater height: 5,000 feet (1,500 m). read more

Flat earth advocate ‘Mad’ Mike Hughes dies in homemade rocket crash

He wanted to prove the Earth was disc-shaped

What just happened? “Mad” Mike Hughes, the flat earther famous for his home-made rocket launches that he hoped would prove our planet was disc-shaped, has died after his latest rocket crashed into the ground.

On February 22, the 64-year-old crash-landed his steam-powered rocket shortly after take-off near Barstow, California. A video posted on Twitter shows the parachute, presumably deployed too early, trailing behind the rocket as it launches. read more

Fox News reports: A self-styled daredevil died Saturday after a rocket in which he launched himself crashed into the ground, a colleague and a witness said. “Mad Mike” Hughes died after the homemade rocket crashed on private property near Barstow about 1:52 p.m. near Highway 247, the Daily Press of Victorville reported. Waldo Stakes, a colleague who was at the rocket launch, said Hughes, 64, was killed.

“Mad” Mike Hughes (Daredevil) had been building a homemade rocket for years to demonstrate that the Earth is flat…
Why take such risks when you just have to dip your feet in lakes, seas and oceans to simply observe the spherical shape of the Earth?

Famous daredevil ‘Mad’ Mike Hughes has died after his self-made rocket crash landed, TMZ have confirmed.  Local reports say Mike propelled himself in ‘self-made steam-powered rocket’ which crashed into the ground.  Reporter Justin Chapman tweeted: “It is very likely he did not survive.”  TMZ later posted an update stated that he had died.  Shocking footage shows his rocket fly into the air at Bairstow in California. After it takes off you can see his parachute drift away, without anyone attached.  Mike’s former representative told TMZ: “When God made Mike he broke the mold. The man was the real deal and lived to push the edge.  “He wouldn’t have gone out any other way! RIP”  The daredevil amateur rocket-maker was reportedly filming for ‘Homemade Astronauts’,  a new series on the Science Channel that follows self-made teams on their quest to reach the sky, according to Space.com.  With the help of his partner Waldo Stakes, he was hoping to reach 5,000 feet (1.5 km) in the air while riding his steam-powered rocket.  The flat-Earther previously told the media that he’s using steam to propel his rocket because it is both inexpensive and relatively simple.  “There’s no fuel cost, it’s water,” he said.  Mike, from California, was a Guinness world record holder with a 103ft jump in a Lincoln Town Car stretch limo.  He built his first manned rocket on January 30, 2014, and flew 1,374 feet in just over a minute over Winkelman, Arizona.  We’ll be bringing you the very latest updates, pictures and video on this breaking news story.  Please check back regularly for updates on this developing story here at  Mirror.co.uk.  For the latest news and breaking news visit  Mirror.co.uk/news.  Get all the big headlines, pictures, analysis, opinion and video on the stories that matter to you.  Follow us on Twitter @DailyMirror – the official Daily Mirror & Mirror Online Twitter account – real news in real time.  We’re also on Facebook/dailymirror – your must-see news, features, videos and pictures throughout the day from the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Mirror Online. Disturbing new video shows the moments before a man, who was launched in a homemade rocket, plunged to his death. About 50 people gathered in a San Bernardino County desert to watch Science Channel star ‘Mad Mike’ Hughes make the launch Saturday.

But the rocket apparently hit a steel ladder on the launch ramp and ripped off a parachute can, which opened and got caught in the thrust of the rocket.

Do not demand apologies. I will not apologize for mocking stupidity. If you choose to deny science and common sense and go build yourself an unsafe rocket to launch yourself thousands of feet into the sky with no unmanned testing you deserve an award. The Darwin Award.

I guess I should have stressed this more. I am not purely mocking his belief of flat earth. The majority of the mockery is directed at his thoroughly unsafe rocket. But I don’t believe most are reading this far anyway so not a big deal. read more
