Almost 50% of golf clubs in South Africa are just weeks away from financial collapse. The golf industry contributes close to R49 billion per annum to the South African economy and offers employment to approximately 60 000 people of which 85% come from the vulnerable sector. The golfing industry and clubs in particular are now pleading with government to relax restrictions for the sport to resume before possibly closing for good.

Beijing responded after US President Donald Trump hinted at seeking reparations from China. Donald Trump has been vocal in criticising China’s response to Covid. Geng Shuang, spokesman, Chinese Foreign Ministry said, “American politicians have repeatedly ignored the facts and talked nonsense. The British government has unveiled another massive income support scheme, this time for 5 million or so self-employed people, many of whom face financial ruin from the shock of the coronavirus pandemic.

Treasury chief Rishi Sunak said the new Self-Employed Income Support Scheme will replicate the one he announced last week for those workers that firms retained rather than lay off.

Sunak said the government will pay self-employed people, who have been adversely affected by the coronavirus outbreak, a grant worth 80% of their average monthly profits over the past three years, up to 2,500 pounds ($2,975) per month. read more
