Wherever you are when an earthquake starts, take cover immediately. Move a few steps to a nearby safe place if need be. Stay there until the shaking stops.

If you are indoors: “DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON”

Stay inside.
Drop under heavy furniture such as a table, desk, bed or any solid furniture.
Cover your head and torso to prevent being hit by falling objects.
Hold on to the object that you are under so that you remain covered. Be prepared to move with the object until the shaking has finished.
If you can’t get under something strong, or if you are in a hallway, flatten yourself or crouch against an interior wall and protect your head and neck with your arms.
If you are in a shopping mall, go into the nearest store. Stay away from windows, and shelves with heavy objects.
If you are at school, get under a desk or table and hold on. Face away from windows.
If you are in a wheelchair, lock the wheels and protect the back of your head and neck. read more

California earthquake felt in Los Angeles and Las Vegas

The strongest earthquake to hit Southern California in 20 years left scattered damage Thursday morning and was felt from Las Vegas to Orange County, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake, with an early magnitude of 6.4, was centered near Ridgecrest, a community west of the Mojave Desert and about 150 miles north of Los Angeles
Ridgecrest Mayor Peggy Breeden said the city has had seventh or eight aftershocks, including “a really good one” as she spoke with CNN shortly before 3 p.m. ET.
“As I understand, we have five fires,” she said. “We have broken gas lines.”

April Rodriguez was at home in Trona when she felt a smaller quake followed by a larger one “that didn’t stop,” she told CNN.
“We were panicked trying to get out of the house because everything is falling out of the cabinets, off the shelves, off the walls. … They were flying like missiles off the shelves.”
At least four large aftershocks and dozens of smaller ones were recorded, officials said.
Lucy Jones of the USGS called it a “robust” series and said there is a 50% chance of another large quake in the next week.
In central Los Angeles, the main temblor was felt as a long, rolling quake, and buildings rocked back and forth for at least several seconds.
The National Weather Service tweeted that the earthquake was also felt in Las Vegas.
It was the largest quake to hit the area since 1999, when a 7.1 earthquake struck in a remote part of the Mojave desert, Jones said.
Jones told reporters, “The earthquake was near China Lake and Ridgecrest. It’s is sparsely inhabited area, so the number of people who would have received damage is much lower.”
In 1994, at least 57 people died in the 6.7 Northridge quake in Los Angeles, which caused $25 billion in damage.
She said there is a 1 in 20 chance that a bigger earthquake will hit within the next few days. “It’s certain that this area is going to be shaking a lot today and some of those aftershocks will probably exceed magnitude 5.”
Jones said the quake was preceded by magnitude 4.2 temblor about 30 minutes before, which she called a foreshock.
Hospital being evacuated
In Kern County, at the epicenter, the Fire Department responded to more than 20 incidents relating to the earthquake and aftershocks, including fires and medical emergencies, according to a tweet on its verified account.
Kern County Fire also tweeted that Ridgecrest Regional Hospital was being evacuated.
Trona, an unincorporated community, “sustained varying degrees of damage” but no injuries have been reported, according to San Bernardino County Fire’s verified Twitter account.
The department reported “minor cracks (in buildings); broken water mains; power lines down; rock slides on certain roads” in northwestern communities in the county.
Dorothea Smith said boulders fell down hillsides, shattering the asphalt and blocking mountain roads.
“There is no going in or out of Trona right now. We’re like stuck.”
Highway 178 has a 4-inch crack, said San Bernardino County Fire spokesman Jeremy Kern. All highways in San Bernardino County remain open. The area’s high tension power lines are all intact.

Diane Ruggiero, general manager of the Hampton Inn and Suites Ridgecrest in Ridgecrest, told CNN’s Paul Vercammen that the hotel sustained significant damage.
“The chandeliers are still swinging,” she said five minutes after the quake hit at 10:33 a.m. PT. “The floor rippled.”

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay tweeted, “Been living in Los Angeles all my life. That was the longest earthquake I’ve ever experienced. Not jerky. Smooth and rolling. But it was loooong. It was so long I thought for the first time ever “Is this the big one?” Damn. Respect Mother Nature. She’s the boss.
In Lancaster, one Twitter user reported people fleeing a movie theater.
“Felt like we were on a turntable,” user Rudio87 wrote.
Los Angeles International Airport said no damage was reported on runways. “Operations remain normal,” it tweeted.
“We have no reports of damage to any FAA facilities or operational effects from the quake at this time,” FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.
A tsunami is not expected, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.

7.1-magnitude earthquake strikes Ridgecrest, shakes San Diego

There is a “high probability” of a magnitude 5 or greater aftershock to tonight’s 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Ridgecrest in the next week, according to seismologist Lucy Jones. There is a 50% chance of a magnitude 6 or greater quake and about a 10% chance of a magnitude 7 or greater temblor in the next week, said USGS seismologist Lucy Jones.

On Thursday, July 4 a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck in southern California at 10.34 local time (4.34pm BST), with strong to very strong shaking felt in Ridgecrest. Shaking was felt by millions of people according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), with areas including Los Angeles and Las Vegas reporting to feel the quake. Following the earthquake, multiple aftershocks have been felt – with 50 to 700 recorded as magnitude three or higher according to the USGS. On July 4, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake also struck 280 miles (450km) from Unalaska and has been followed by further smaller quakes. Today alone, (July 5) 13 quakes ranging from magnitude 1.1 to magnitude 3.6 have shaken Alaska. Now the threat level for volcanoes has been upgraded following the increased seismicity. According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) and USGS: “Due to an increase in seismicity above background levels over at least the last eight hours AVO is raising the Aviation Colour Code to YELLOW and Alert Level to ADVISORY at Semisopochnoi. Read More: Earthquake today: Katla, Etna, Kilauea and Mount St Helens rumble  “No explosive activity has been detected on the Adak infrasound array and clouds currently obscure satellite views of the volcano. “AVO will continue to monitor the volcano using satellite, infrasound and seismic data.” On July 4, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck 450km from Unalaska, and has been followed by further smaller quakes. Semisopochnoi is an island which is part of the Rat Islands group, in the western Aleutian Islands of Alaska.  The island is uninhabited, and is an important area for maritime birds, with many breeds choosing to nest there. Alaska is no stranger to earthquakes, as several tectonic features in the area can produce high magnitude quakes. According to the Alaska Earthquake Centre, the Aleutian megathrust is the source of the strongest earthquakes in the region, such as the 1938 M8.3 earthquake southwest of Kodiak Island. These earthquakes are capable of producing damaging tsunamis, as was documented in historical records of Russian settlers and in recently discovered paleo-tsunami deposits.  Both Alaska and California are located on the explosive Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped area spanning 40,000 km around the basin of the Pacific Ocean. Within the Ring of Fire, there are oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, volcanic belts and plate movements almost continuously. About 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes and 81 percent of the world’s largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire. In terms of volcanoes, all but three of the world’s 25 largest volcanic eruptions of the last 11,700 years occurred at volcanoes in the Ring of Fire. read more

The record for the largest earthquake to hit southern California in more than two decades only lasted a little more than 24 hours.  Ridgecrest, California and surrounding areas were hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake July 4, and they were hit again by an even more severe earthquake July 5. Some seismic measures recorded the earthquake at 6.9, while others reported it was 7.1. The area was also hit by a series of smaller aftershocks. The quakes could be felt as far away as Los Angeles and Ridgecrest.  After the series of earthquakes, one thing was clear on social media: Californians were tired of the quakes.  Twitter also had a lot to say about the Clippers signing Kawhi Leonard and trading for Paul George the same night as an earthquake hit the NBA.  Here’s what you need to know: Californians Are Getting Pummeled By Quakes And Reacting With Memes  The memes flooded social media nearly as soon as the earthquake hit at about 9 p.m. July 5. One person wrote on Twitter, “God after all of us rush on twitter to make a joke about the earthquake”    Another person shared a video of Will Smith reacting to an earthquake on Fresh Prince of Bel Air, hugging a teddy bear under a table.    Another person shared a gif about mixed feelings when it comes to natural disasters.    Another person shared a viral video of a reporter that circulated the Internet several years ago. She wrote, “Me: not being able to relate to all the locals complaining about the earthquakes bc I’m out of the state rn Also me: 5 seconds after leaving California”  (This video contains profanity).    Another person wrote, “After seeing all the memes after the California earthquake this is probably correct. #EarthquakeLA”    Of course, Twitter needed a dancing dog meme for the earthquake.    And what meme list is complete without a Michael Scott gif? Twitter Reacts To Clippers Signing Kawhi  The Clippers signed Kawhi Leonard the same night as an earthquake hit the NBA. Twitter had a lot to say about it.  Meme Central wrote, “No One:  “Kawhi and Paul George to the Clippers EVEN after all these earthquakes:”    Milik wrote, “No one: California: EARTHQUAKE Kawhi & Woj: 2 AM”    Another person wrote, “The entire NBA media just felt two earthquakes in the span of four hours.”    Another person commented on the irony of the earthquake and its impact on the game.  “I’m not saying that this PG and Kawhi to the Clippers news caused that earthquake in LA, but I’m not NOT saying that either. Also, Jerry West has to be one of the best front office executives in NBA history in additon to being a legend on the court, salute that man.”    Another person wrote, “How Clippers fans are going to sleep tonight after surviving an earthquake and learning they’ve signed both Kawhi and Paul George.”    Others also tweeted about the trade in memes. Southern California is awaiting more aftershocks after two powerful earthquakes rocked the area this week. The 7.1 magnitude quake, which hit just after 8 p.m. local time, was felt from Los Angeles all the way to Nevada and caused injuries, sparked fires and closed roadways. The quake was centered in the Mojave Desert near the town of Ridgecrest, which is still recovering from a 6.4 magnitude quake on the Fourth of July.
