Dave Chappelle accepted the Mark Twain Prize at the Kennedy Center on Sunday by expressing gratitude for friends and family, defending the freedom of speech of comedians and by smoking on stage.
āWhat are they going to do? Kick me out before I get the prize?ā he quipped to the audience, according to USA Today, after he was feted by a long list of fellow comedians and performers, including Jon Stewart, Tiffany Haddish, Kenan Thompson, Aziz Ansari, Sarah Silverman, Morgan Freeman. John Legend, Lorne Michaels and Bradley Cooper. Also at the event was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).

Comedian Dave Chappelle on Sunday (October 27) received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
A lineup of actors and entertainers, including Jon Stewart and Morgan Freeman paid tribute to the comedian whose witty, sharp and oftentimes irreverent social commentary explores race, politics, sex and popular culture.
They all said Chappelle is brilliant, makes them laugh and deserves the recognition.
