A Royal Navy ship reportedly aimed its guns at Iranian boats after they attempted to seize a British oil tanker.   HMS Montrose was escorting the British Heritage tanker through the Persian Gulf when the stand-off with five Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats took place on Wednesday, according to CNN.  It is claimed the boats told the tanker to change course and enter Iran’s territorial waters, with a US aircraft recording the incident.  HMS Montrose, which was trailing the tanker, then trained its guns on the Iranian vessels and warned them to back off.  The Iranian boats obeyed the frigate’s instructions, which were issued over the radio.  Thirty British commandos stormed an Iranian oil tanker bound for Syria last week, prompting Iran’s President to threaten the UK with retaliatory action.  Britain’s Ministry of Defence had no immediate comment.   Iran was accused of attacks on six tankers either in or near the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Oman and Persian gulfs, in the last few months.  The US and Saudi Arabia, its major ally in the Middle East, blamed Iran for the incidents, although Tehran denied responsibility. read more

IRAN has threatened to seize a British oil tanker if the Iranian tanker detained in Gibraltar is not immediately released.

British Royal Marines seized the supertanker Grace 1 on Thursday, accusing it of trying to take oil to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions. But this dramatic step has infuriated Iran, threatening to escalate confrontations with the West. Mohsen Rezai, a senior commander in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards said in a tweet: “If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the (Iranian) authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker.” read more

British Royal Marines seized an oil tanker in Gibraltar on Thursday accused of bringing oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions, a dramatic step that could escalate confrontation between the West and Iran.

Footage of a British oil tanker seized by Iran has been released on Iranian state television.

Iranian officials initially claimed the Stena Impero violated international maritime regulations after ramming a shipping vessel, but now say the vessel was seized in retaliation to the earlier seizure of an Iranian vessel in the Mediterranean.

Three Iranian boats tried to intercept a British oil tanker in the Gulf before being driven off by a Royal Navy warship, the UK said, in a major escalation of tensions in the vital shipping channel off Iran.

The incident took place in the strait of Hormuz through which the commercial vessel British Heritage was attempting to pass on Wednesday.

It is the latest in a series of recent incidents in the area which have sent tensions between Iran and the US soaring. It also comes after the UK seizure last week of an Iranian oil tanker, the Grace 1, off the coast of Gibraltar, for which Tehran has threatened retaliation. read more

BRITAIN should be “scared” about Tehran’s retaliation over the dramatic seizure of an Iranian supertanker by Royal Marines, a firebrand cleric warned today.

Mohammad Ali Mousavi Jazayeri hinted the Islamic Republic may strike back over the capture of the giant vessel, impounded over fears it was illegally shipping oil to Syria.

“I am openly saying that Britain should be scared of Iran’s retaliatory measures over the illegal seizure of the Iranian oil tanker,” said the cleric, a member of the powerful clerical body the Assembly of Experts. read more

British super tanker Pacific Voyager drifted in the Persian Gulf for six hours today prompting Iranian officials to announce that they had not boarded the 1,000ft vessel which was just outside its waters. The tanker was en-route between Singapore and Ras Tanura in Saudi Arabia when it slowed to a halt this morning. UK officials said it had slowed to adjust its time of arrival in port.
