After The Telegraph revealed that Public Health England has for the first time approved a test for use, Edward Argar said that the Government was working to purchase “as many” as it could for use in the UK.

It is understood that the Department of Health is now in negotiations with the Swiss healthcare company Roche to buy millions of the kits, after the accuracy of the test was given the green light by experts at PHE’s Porton Down facility last week.

The development of an accurate antibody test, which shows whether someone has recovered from the virus, has long been seen as key to helping Britain get back to work. read more

A New York study seeking to measure the spread of the new coronavirus found that 13.9% of 3,000 people tested across the state had signs of the virus, one of the biggest U.S. reviews to date.

That implies that about 2.7 million residents may have had Covid-19, Governor Andrew Cuomo said. That’s about 10 times more than the official count based on the state’s testing, which covered mostly very sick patients.

The pandemic was more intense in New York City, the hardest-hit area in the U.S. There, 21.2% of people tested positive for a blood marker showing that they had been infected at some point. read more

In the fight against the coronavirus, there is still one big unknown: how many people have actually contracted it, maybe even without showing any symptoms? One way to answer this question is through antibody tests. An antibody is a protective protein produced by the immune system to destroy harmful viruses and infections. When a pathogen enters the body, the immune system recognizes it and produces antibodies that dock onto the pathogen’s antigens to remove them. Later a blood test can be used to detect these antibodies in a person’s blood stream. Antibodies are also used in vaccines to make people immune to future infections. But immunity doesn’t last a lifetime in all cases. So what do we know about Sars-CoV-2? How long will people be immune after an infection? read more

COVID-19 Update 54 with critical care specialist Roger Seheult, MD of https://www.MedCram.com

Production of COVID-19 antibody test kits are ramping up – there are over 70 companies producing them. Antibody tests could be one of the keys to eventually easing social distancing restrictions and allowing schools and businesses to re-open. Unfortunately, only one antibody test is FDA approved at this time, and the approval of each company will take some time. Dr. Seheult illustrates how antibody tests and PCR-RT tests for COVID-19 work on the cellular level, and he discusses potential coronavirus vaccine challenges. read more
