CDC Director Robert Redfield said Thursday that he’s “very concerned” the agency’s public health message on the coronavirus isn’t “resonating” with the public as the number of cases continues to rise across the U.S.

Testifying before the House Appropriations Committee, Redfield said he sees “a lot of people” not wearing masks in Washington, D.C., where he works, while many people do wear masks in his hometown of Baltimore. Crowds of people have been seen in recent weeks at protests, over the Memorial Day holiday and, Redfield noted, at the SpaceX launch Saturday. read more

More than 33 million Americans have lost their jobs in the past 7 weeks, roughly 1 in 5 of the workforce. It is a devastating turnaround for a country whose jobless rate was at a 50 year low just 8 weeks ago.

Meanwhile France will begin lifting what has been one of the strictest lockdowns in Europe on Monday. Most businesses will reopen and people will be allowed to leave home without a permit.

Areas of the country are being given different ratings, with some, like people in Paris, having to wait longer for restrictions to be eased. read more

U.S. President Donald Trump delivered remarks on protecting America’s seniors in the East Room on Thursday.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a proclamation declaring May to be “Older Americans Month,” and also announced steps that the U.S. is taking to protect seniors amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump said that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be sending supplemental shipments of personal protective equipment (PPE) to all Medicaid and Medicare-certified nursing homes in the country. He also stated that nursing homes will have to begin reporting information about COVID-19 cases directly to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), residents and their family members, aiming for testing data to be posted online. read more

A new Associated Press analysis shows how African Americans are dying from COVID-19 at alarming rates around the country. MSNBC’s Ari Melber reports on the glaring disparities across the country and the inequalities that cause them. President Trump called protesters demanding an end to the lockdown “responsible people” – hours after encouraging demonstrations in Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia.

Trump had earlier called for the “liberation” of the Democrat-run states in a series of incendiary tweets. The president admitted Thursday it was up to governors to reopen their states amid the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming 29 were close to ending their lockdowns.

Asked about the protesters Friday, Trump said: “These are people expressing their views. They seem to be very responsible people […] they’ve been treated a little bit rough.” read more
