An American Pickle is an upcoming American comedy film directed by Brandon Trost in his directorial debut and starring Seth Rogen. The film is based upon the 2013 short story “Sell Out” by Simon Rich, who also wrote the film’s screenplay. It is the first Point Grey Pictures film to be rated PG-13 by the MPAA.
It is scheduled to be released on August 6, 2020, by HBO Max; the first original film released by the streaming service.
The film follows Herschel Greenbaum, a struggling laborer who immigrates to America in 1920 with dreams of building a better life for his beloved family. One day, while working at his factory job, he falls into a vat of pickles and is brined for 100 years. The brine preserves him perfectly and when he emerges in present-day Brooklyn, he finds that he hasnāt aged a day. But when he seeks out his family, he is horrified to learn that his only surviving relative is his great-grandson, Ben Greenbaum, a mild-mannered computer programmer whom Herschel canāt even begin to understand.”

At a quick glance of movie stills, it seems like it may just be a Fiddler on the Roof fanfic but could there be more to it? Watch to see how this Orthodox woman reacts to a trailer about what would happen if a man from a shtetl is suddenly a part of our world.

“There was a realĀ sense from people I know that thought maybe it was a joke and not an actual movie that we were spending huge amounts of time and energy working on,” says Rogen, whose “Pickle” will silence skeptics. The film isĀ bypassing a theatrical release to stream on HBO Max (Aug. 6, with a trailer thatĀ dropped Friday). “It was in fact real. SoĀ I’m excited to show it to people.”
