The UK has been following the 'Yellow Brick Road' all the way to the cinema this weekend as Disney's Oz The Great and Powerful opened as the clear number one film across the country. Disney's latest hit, heralded by the critics as a "classic", took an Oztastic £3.7 million over a three day weekend leaving this week's other new releases all trailing beneath the £1 million mark.
Across the globe Disney found box office gold at the end of the rainbow as Oz opened worldwide at number one, with estimated returns of $150m. In the US Disney opened the film to a phenomenal $80.3 million - the biggest 2013 debut and third biggest March opener ever. The film, from visionary director Sam Raimi and starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz has been critically acclaimed for its spectacular 3D, with Stylist claiming the film "is possibly the most glorious 3D movie ever made". Metro praised the film's 3D as "sensational" and Daybreak's Aled Jones stated "it is the best 3D film I've ever seen!"
"Oz is the quintessential fairytale and in describing the Land of Oz, we really wanted it to be an explosion of colors and images and sounds that moviegoers had never seen before" says director Sam Raimi on the film's 3D. "We wanted to really take them to this magical land, to let them smell the flowers and feel the butterflies flapping against them, and so we brought in the technology of 3D because it would really allow us to immerse them in this world and give them not just a movie but an experience"
