Her involvement has long been uncertain, but it looks like Kate Beckinsale will be back for a 5th Underworld movie. Today’s episode of Clevver News Feed is brought to you by Pitch Perfect 2, now playing! Plans for a new Underworld movie have been in the works for some time with great uncertainty of how the popular action-horror movie would be moving forward. Back in August it was reported that producers were looking to reboot the franchise with a new cast only to bring word a month later that it would not be a reboot after all, but instead focus on Theo James’ “David” character from 2012’s Underworld: Awakening with Kate Beckinsale likely not returning. Then in October, series co-creator and director Len Wiseman revealed that the Theo James film, titled Underworld: Next Generation, would be more of a spinoff to expand the universe ala Marvel with Kate Beckinsale likely to return to the franchise at some point. Well, that some point appears to be now as THR reports that Kate Beckinsale has officially signed on to once again play vampire “Selene” in a fifth Underworld movie. As for Theo James, he told Digital Spy back in March that he would likely not be involved in Next Generation due to his commitments to the Divergent franchise and other commitments, but THR does point out that he is currently attached to reprise his role in the film to fulfill his option agreement. In addition to Beckinsale’s return, the film has also landed Anna Foerster to helm the project. This will mark Foerster’s first feature directing gig. She previously has worked as Director of Photography and Second Unit Director work on several of Roland Emmerich’s films including White House Down, 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow. She has also directed several episodes of the Starz series, Outlander. The plot of Underworld 5 is being kept under wraps, but is expected to focus on a new generation of vampires and werewolves with production set to begin this October in Prague for a likely release late 2016 or early 2017.
