Coronavirus outbreak: Trump threatens to “adjourn” congress over obstruction | FULL
Displeased with pro-forma sessions, which he called a “scam,” U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to “adjourn” both the House and the Senate in order to fill vacancies which he said had stood empty for years but are now needed “more so than ever before because of the virus.”
Trump later said he did not want to use the constitutional power that would allow him to adjourn congress, and declined to say by what date he planned to do so, saying only that “they’ve been warned.”
The president made the comments during a daily briefing alongside members of the White House coronavirus task force.
He also spoke about reopening the U.S. economy, alleging “there’s also death” in keeping businesses shut. Trump suggested that some states would be able to end lockdowns ahead of the May 1 deadline that Trump had previously set to revive the U.S. economy.
He said he would speak to governors of several states on Thursday and would have an announcement on the topic following the meeting.
The U.S. had 634,975 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday evening, according to data compiled by researchers at John Hopkins University. There have been 27,940 deaths from the virus.
