The White House says it will veto the House’s $3 trillion relief plan, otherwise known as the HEROES Act, should it pass the Senate. Meanwhile, President Trump said Friday that he is confident there will be a coronavirus vaccine by the end of 2020. Politico’s Daniel Lippman joins CBSN’s Lana Zak to discuss Friday’s top political headlines.

Donald Trump has stepped up his anti-China rhetoric saying he was very disappointed over its failure to contain the novel coronavirus.

It’s now thought the US-China trade deal could be under threat.

As Washington and Beijing signed a Phase 1 trade deal in December, hailed by the Republican president as a major achievement, the COVID-19 outbreak broke out in Wuhan, China, and was spreading silently

In an interview broadcast on Fox Business Network the US President said:

“They should have never let this happen… I make a great trade deal and now I say this doesn’t feel the same to me. The ink was barely dry and the plague came over. And it doesn’t feel the same to me.” read more

Displeased with pro-forma sessions, which he called a “scam,” U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to “adjourn” both the House and the Senate in order to fill vacancies which he said had stood empty for years but are now needed “more so than ever before because of the virus.”

Trump later said he did not want to use the constitutional power that would allow him to adjourn congress, and declined to say by what date he planned to do so, saying only that “they’ve been warned.” read more

A months-long lockdown starts to ease today in Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus outbreak was first reported. The city’s drastic measures have served as a model for countries battling the coronavirus around the world. After 11 weeks, Chinese authorities are now allowing residents of Wuhan more freedom of movement. This milestone comes as China reported no new deaths on Tuesday.
New York is still reporting sharply rising casualties from the coronavirus. The death toll has now climbed above four thousand, many more than died in the 9-11 attacks. The state reported its biggest one day jump in fatalities on Tuesday. Hospitals remain overstretched. But governor Andrew Cuomo insists the number of deaths is levelling off. He says this shows social distancing is working.
Much of Europe remains under lockdown, the strategy many nations here are taking to curb the spread of the coronavirus. But there are exceptions. Denmark is among a few countries who’ve decided to the time has come to start lifting restrictions.
Other developments on the coronavirus pandemic:
– The global death toll from Covid-19 is now more than 82,000, with more than 1.4 Mmillion infections since the outbreak began.
– British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has spent his second night in intensive care. He is said to be in a stable condition and noton a ventilator.
– The head of the EU’s top science organization has resigned. Mauro Ferrari said he faced institutional and political obstacles while trying to swiftly set up a scientific program to combat the virus.
– A global condom shortage is looming due to virus lockdown measures in major production hubs, like Malaysia. The UN warns of devastating public health consequences. read more

US president Donald Trump has given conflicting statements about the future of US funding to the World Health Organization. In a bid to find a scapegoat for the dire situation in the US, Trump began blaming the WHO for ’calling it wrong’. The president then said: ‘We’re going to put a hold on money spent to the WHO.’  But when pressed by reporters, he conceded that he was just ‘looking at’ a possible suspension. Trump’s early inaction has come under renewed scrutiny as new reports show his top trade adviser Peter Navarro wrote several memos weeks ago warning of the potential, dire impacts of the coronavirus

A tit-for-tat response against the U.K. is coming from an Iranian official. Melissa Duggan on the threat that follows the seizure of an oil tanker suspected of carrying Iranian oil to Syria.

An Iranian official has threatened to seize a British oil tanker if a detained Iranian ship is not released. Mohsen Rezaee, a member of a council that advises Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, said that Iran would respond to bullies “without hesitation”. Britain seized the Iranian oil tanker for trying to take oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions. #sutathu,#iran,#britishoiltanker,#world

British Royal Marines seized the supertanker Grace 1 on Thursday, accusing it of trying to take oil to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions. But this dramatic step has infuriated Iran, threatening to escalate confrontations with the West. Mohsen Rezai, a senior commander in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards said in a tweet: “If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the (Iranian) authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker.” He added: “Islamic Iran in its 40-year history has never initiated hostilities in any battles but has also never hesitated in responding to bullies.” Tehran had summoned the British ambassador to voice “its very strong objection to the illegal and unacceptable seizure” of its ship. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the Iranian oil tanker was carrying crude oil from Iran, according to the state news agency IRNA. Gibraltar said it had reasonable grounds to believe the Grace 1 was carrying crude oil to the Baniyas refinery in Syria. The Grace 1 was impounded off the coast of Gibraltar after sailing around Africa – the longer route from the Middle East to the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea The EU has had sanctions in place for nearly a decade that restrict oil sales to Syria. Europe does not have broad sanctions in place against Iran, but the US does, forcing Tehran into mainstream markets to look for unconventional outlets to sell oil. But Spain also reignited its war of words with Britain over sovereignty in Gibraltar following the seizure of the tanker. Acting Foreign Minister Josep Borrell has claimed Gibraltar detained the supertanker Grace 1 after a request by the US to Britain. Mr Borrell, who is set to take over as the EU’s foreign policy chief, said the Spanish Government had been kept informed about the seizure. But he added they would look at whether it violated its territorial water claims. Spain does not recognise Britain’s sovereignty over Gibraltar, which dates all the way back to a 1713 treaty. Mr Borrell said, according to the Europa Press news agency: “We’re looking at which way this affects our sovereignty, in as far as it took place in waters whose sovereignty we understand to belong to Spain. This is a breaking story. Iranian military commanders warned it will be their “duty” to respond in kind following the dramatic swoop yesterday on 300,000-tonne vessel Grace 1. Grace 1 is believed to have been transporting oil from Iran to a refinery in Syria, flaunting international sanctions.  Royal Marines used helicopters and fast attack boats to capture the vessel – flagged to Panama – in a dramatic operation.  Revolutionary Guard commander Mohsen Rezai however threatened to seize a British tanker in response. Taking to Twitter, he said: “If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the Iranian authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker.” Tehran authorities also summonded the British ambassador to answer for the incident which they have branded “piracy”.     Royal Marines were hailed for the “brave” and “bold” operation to seize the tanker suspected of carrying oil destined for the cruel regime of Bashar al-Assad.  The marines worked alongside the authorities in Gibraltar to detain the Grace 1, which was believed to be heading to the Banyas refinery in breach of European Union sanctions. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the swift action by the authorities on the Rock and the Royal Marines would deny valuable resources to Assad’s “murderous regime”. The marines were brought in to use their specialist boarding skills to help ensure the Royal Gibraltar Police could gain access to the tanker at sea.    The first marines onto the vessel descended on ropes from a Wildcat helicopter, while others were in rigid inflatable boats – around 16 Royal Gibraltar Police officers were also involved in the mission. The British ambassador to Tehran met with Iranian ministry of foreign affairs officials on Thursday afternoon after being summoned by Iran, it is understood. He was to reiterate the UK’s backing of the firm actions taken by Gibraltar in enforcing the sanctions. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi reportedly told Iranian state TV that the ambassador was summoned over the “illegal seizure” of the tanker. Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo praised the “brave men and women” of the Royal Marines, the Royal Gibraltar Police, HM Customs Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Port Authority for their work in securing the detention of the vessel and its cargo. Mr Hunt congratulated those involved in the “bold move to enforce Syria sanctions”.    Mr Picardo said: “In the early hours of this morning, Gibraltar port and law enforcement agencies, assisted by a detachment of Royal Marines, boarded a supertanker carrying crude oil to Syria. “We have detained the vessel and its cargo. This action arose from information giving the Gibraltar government reasonable grounds to believe that the vessel, the Grace 1, was acting in breach of EU sanctions against Syria. “In fact we have reason to believe that the Grace 1 was carrying its shipment of crude oil to the Banyas refinery in Syria.” The EU has imposed a series of sanctions against Assad’s regime in Syria i read more

senior Iranian official has threatened to seize a British oil tanker in retaliation for the United Kingdom’s boarding and seizure of the Iranian supertanker Grace 1 off the coast of Gibraltar over suspected sanctions violations yesterday. The incident comes as Iran says it will begin enriching uranium in violation a controversial international agreement that the United Kingdom, along with France and Germany, have been struggling to salvage after the U.S. government pulled out last year. It also follows a spate of attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and as tensions between the United States and Iran have pushed those two countries worryingly close to open conflict. read more
