New Zealand is accelerating a cabinet decision to tear down all COVID-19 restrictions except border controls to Monday thanks to exceptional control of the virus.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern painted a picture of what life would look like under easing at alert level 1 – which would see all current rules on business and services lifted and social distancing abolished.
Ms Ardern stressed it is important Kiwis adopt new behaviours despite the change such as hygiene.
“Ultimately, level 1 represents us getting the virus under control, but the war doesn’t end so long as COVID is still around the world, and the economic damage caused by it is ongoing,” she said.
With coronavirus restrictions rapidly easing – and Winter now here – we’re warned that there could be renewed growth in infections in Australia.
It will be some time before we see if there are any signs of a second wave – but at least one country is already experiencing one.
Analyst Casey Briggs reports.

Boris Johnson has confirmed that from Monday in England, groups of up to six people will be able to meet outside with others from different households as long as they “observe social distancing rules”.
He added: “We will now allow people to meet in gardens and other private spaces. These changes mean friends and family can start to meet their loved ones, perhaps, seeing both parents or grandparents at once.”
Mr Johnson said that for many people, this will be a “long awaited, and joyful moment”.
Images of crowds in Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods Park sparked outrage and raised concerns the public health effort against COVID-19 is running up against warm weather — and growing fatigue of isolation.

Victorians will be able to host up to five visitors in their homes and meet outdoors in groups of 10 from Wednesday, under the state’s first relaxation of coronavirus restrictions.
Under what Premier Daniel Andrews termed the first “safe, cautious and appropriate step” towards normality, Victorians will be able to go fishing, hiking, play golf and join walking groups, provided physical distancing is maintained.
The Government has also come to an agreed set of arrangements to allow professional sporting codes, including the AFL, to resume training from Wednesday, he said.
Victoria has become the final state in Australia to ease its coronavirus restrictions, with Daniel Andrews announcing what the first stage will look like and when it will happen.
