Canadian Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau chaired virtual round table with the Head of Research and Capacity Development at the UN-Habitat Dr. Eduardo Lopez Moreno on Friday to discuss the impact on COVID-19 on urban economies.
Many Canadian Mayors, Councillors and Chairs joined the meeting and spoke about their regions’ progress to recover local and regional economies amid the pandemic.
Minister Morneau highlighted some of the Canadian government’s initiatives to help people during the pandemic including the Canada Emergency Response Benefit and stressed on that the government’s work would be “imperfect by definition, because we won’t be able to solve everything for everyone.”

New Delhi, May 31 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the difficulties people faced during lockdown; he mentioned that poor and labourers were among the worst affected due to COVID-19 cases. “There is no section in our country that is unaffected by the difficulties caused by the disease. However, the worst affected are the poor and the labourers. Their pain, their agony, and their ordeal can’t be expressed in words,” said PM Modi.

After The Telegraph revealed that Public Health England has for the first time approved a test for use, Edward Argar said that the Government was working to purchase “as many” as it could for use in the UK.
It is understood that the Department of Health is now in negotiations with the Swiss healthcare company Roche to buy millions of the kits, after the accuracy of the test was given the green light by experts at PHEβs Porton Down facility last week.
The development of an accurate antibody test, which shows whether someone has recovered from the virus, has long been seen as key to helping Britain get back to work.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson updates House of Commons on the Government’s Coronavirus strategy.
Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu briefs the media on her department’s response to COVID-19 as SASSA offices across the country opens up.
Boris Johnson has set out his “conditional plan” to ease the coronavirus lockdown, lifting restrictions on exercise and work.
In a pre-recorded address to the nation, the Prime Minister said the government wants to “encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise” – provided they stick to social distancing guidelines and stay two metres apart.
And in a bid to kickstart the economy, Mr Johnson said anyone who cannot work from home – such as those in construction and manufacturing – should be “actively encouraged” to go to work from Monday.
Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan spoke on the Covid-19 situation in India and said that India is prepared for the worst situation. βRecovery rate has climbed up to 29.9%, doubling rate for the last three days has been about 11 days,β the health minister said. Dr Vardhan also spoke on the testing capacity of India and said the country has capacity of about 95,000 tests. βWe have tested 15,25,631 tests till now,β he added.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to hold his daily COVID-19 briefing in Ottawa on Tuesday and will discuss the ongoing government response to the pandemic, including support for agricultural sectors.
The government had been scheduled at the end of March to release its first budget since winning re-election as a minority. But that release was scrapped when the House of Commons suspended on March 13 as part of a nationwide shutdown to try to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The Minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi briefs the country on the back-to-work readiness. This as a result of the country moving from Covid-19 Level 5 to Level 4 which will result in more businesses and industries opening and more South Africans having to resume their duties.

The House of Commons will be asked on Wednesday to give rapid approval to legislation authorizing $9 billion in promised financial assistance for students facing bleak summer job prospects in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But whether the Trudeau government will get the unanimous consent needed to expedite the billβs approval in a matter of hours today remained to be seen late Tuesday.
Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize will on Tuesday shed more light on the future of the Covid-19 lockdown. Mkhizeβs briefing comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday that some of the lockdown regulations will be relaxed to allow limited economic activity. Mkhize will be joined by Deputy Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla, provincial MECs and experts from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

Singapore authorities have now made it mandatory to wear a mask when stepping out of the house, with immediate effect.
