Canadian Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau chaired virtual round table with the Head of Research and Capacity Development at the UN-Habitat Dr. Eduardo Lopez Moreno on Friday to discuss the impact on COVID-19 on urban economies.

Many Canadian Mayors, Councillors and Chairs joined the meeting and spoke about their regions’ progress to recover local and regional economies amid the pandemic.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson updates House of Commons on the Government’s Coronavirus strategy.

Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu briefs the media on her department’s response to COVID-19 as SASSA offices across the country opens up.

Boris Johnson has set out his “conditional plan” to ease the coronavirus lockdown, lifting restrictions on exercise and work.

In a pre-recorded address to the nation, the Prime Minister said the government wants to “encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise” – provided they stick to social distancing guidelines and stay two metres apart.

And in a bid to kickstart the economy, Mr Johnson said anyone who cannot work from home – such as those in construction and manufacturing – should be “actively encouraged” to go to work from Monday. read more

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan spoke on the Covid-19 situation in India and said that India is prepared for the worst situation. β€œRecovery rate has climbed up to 29.9%, doubling rate for the last three days has been about 11 days,” the health minister said. Dr Vardhan also spoke on the testing capacity of India and said the country has capacity of about 95,000 tests. β€œWe have tested 15,25,631 tests till now,” he added.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to hold his daily COVID-19 briefing in Ottawa on Tuesday and will discuss the ongoing government response to the pandemic, including support for agricultural sectors.

The government had been scheduled at the end of March to release its first budget since winning re-election as a minority. But that release was scrapped when the House of Commons suspended on March 13 as part of a nationwide shutdown to try to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize will on Tuesday shed more light on the future of the Covid-19 lockdown. Mkhize’s briefing comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday that some of the lockdown regulations will be relaxed to allow limited economic activity.
