Daredevil and Flat Earth theorist Michael “Mad Mike” Hughes died Saturday in a rocket crash. Hughes, 64, wanted to prove the Flat Earth theory by taking photographs of the Earth from a homemade rocket.  Saturday’s rocket launch was to be featured on the Science Channel, which was chronicling Hughes’ attempts to launch himself high enough in a homemade rocket to take pictures of the curvature — or lack thereof as far as Hughes was concerned — of the Earth. This particular launch was only supposed to take Hughes 5,000 feet in the air, according to Discovery. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike Hughes’ family and friends during this difficult time. It was always his dream to do this launch, and Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey,” Science Channel said in a statement. Although police did not positively identify Hughes, San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Public Information Officer  Cindy Bachman said Saturday in a statement, “A man was pronounced deceased after the rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event. Medical aid was staged for the launch and was on scene immediately.”  Hughes had previously completed a successful launch in March 2018, which sent him 1,800 feet in the air.  “The Flat Earth thing is like everything else to me,” Hughes told CBS News in October 2018. “I just want people to question everything. Question what your congressman is doing, your city council. Question what really happened during the Civil War. What happened during 9/11.”  At the time, Hughes stated that he built his homemade rocket mostly through, “trial and error,” and admitted, “You don’t get a lot of second chances, though, in the rocket business.” read more

Do not demand apologies. I will not apologize for mocking stupidity. If you choose to deny science and common sense and go build yourself an unsafe rocket to launch yourself thousands of feet into the sky with no unmanned testing you deserve an award. The Darwin Award.

I guess I should have stressed this more. I am not purely mocking his belief of flat earth. The majority of the mockery is directed at his thoroughly unsafe rocket. But I don’t believe most are reading this far anyway so not a big deal. read more

It was the final flight of the “rocket man,” Mike Hughes. Moments after liftoff, his rocket plummeted to the earth, killing him instantly. ‘Mad Mike’ was a daredevil who believed the earth was flat and set out to prove it by building his own steam-powered rockets in his garage. He wanted to fly to the edge of space to see for himself. His first launch in 2018 was successful, but this time, something went terribly wrong.

Bumper cars
Bumper cars (in the US) or dodgems (in other English-speaking countries) is the generic name for a type of flat ride consisting of several small electrically powered cars which draw power from the floor and/or ceiling, and which are turned on and off remotely by an operator.[1] They are also known as bumping cars and dashing cars.
Design[edit]
Power is commonly supplied by one of two methods:

The oldest and most common method uses a conductive floor and ceiling, each with a separate power polarity. Contacts under the vehicle touch the floor while a pole-mounted contact touches the ceiling, forming a complete circuit.
A newer method uses alternating strips of metal across the floor separated by insulating spacers, and no ceiling grid.[2] The alternating strips carry the supply current, and the cars are large enough so that the vehicle body can always cover at least two strips at any one time. An array of brushes under each car make random contact with whatever strip is below, and the voltage polarity on each contact is sorted out to always provide a correct and complete circuit to operate the vehicle.
The bumper cars on the Quantum-class cruise ships run on batteries. This avoids the conductive floor/ceiling of the traditional bumper cars setup, as the SeaPlex venue is to be readily convertible from a bumper cars ride to a multipurpose gym (basketball court). The disadvantage is that these ships’ bumper cars take several hours to recharge their batteries.

The metal floor is usually set up as a rectangular or oval track, and graphite is sprinkled on the floor to decrease friction.[citation needed] A rubber bumper surrounds each vehicle, and drivers ram each other as they travel. The controls are usually an accelerator and a steering wheel. The cars can be made to go backwards by turning the steering wheel far enough in either direction, necessary in the frequent pile-ups that occur. read more

“How did this happen?”: 2 killed in sports car that crashed into building’s 2nd story

Police released the identities of the two men who died after the red Porsche they were riding in went airborne into a second story real estate office in New Jersey early Sunday.

Braden DeMartin, 22, and Daniel Foley, 23, both of Toms River, were deceased when emergency units arrived on scene, police said.

Police said the sports car driven by DeMartin was traveling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle lost control, hit the median and went airborne into the second story of EXIT Realty Elite. The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.
The red Porsche Boxster was clearly visible upside down in the second story office building. There was a gaping hole in the brick building with debris scattered on top of the car. Toms River building inspector John Gerrity deemed the building unsafe, police said.
The road was closed for roughly seven hours between 6:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., police said. The accident remains under investigation by Toms River traffic safety officers. read more
