Parents want to know when they can send children back to school. Continued school closures will have a detrimental impact on pupil progress, Gavin Williamson, the Education Secretary, acknowledged earlier in the lockdown.

Boris Johnson delivered an announcement on Sunday May 10 about phase two of the shutdown, indicating that the return to school would be gradual, rather than a wholesale lifting of the lockdown.

The Education Secretary also defended the PM’s key adviser Dominic Cummings’ lockdown travel. read more

Turkey, which had one of the fastest growing coronavirus outbreaks in the world, says it is turning the tide.

The rate of infection is slowing to its lowest level since the first recorded case back in March. The authorities say a nationwide contact tracing system, involving almost 6,000 teams, has been the key to overcoming the virus.

Meanwhile in the UK, the pandemic is posing a particular challenge in rural areas, where the population is often older and poorer. But in the village of Piddle-Hinton, in Dorset, a huge volunteer effort has brought unexpected benefits for its 500 residents. read more

In his first appearance back at the daily government briefings, Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared that the UK has past the peak of the coronavirus.

Despite stressing that the lockdown must remain in place, he promised to lay out possible exit strategies next week.

The government has ramped up plans for contact tracing – a painstaking method used to slow down and contain the spread of infectious outbreaks.
It means tracking down people who have been in prolonged contact with Covid-19 sufferers, to potentially ask them to self-isolate. read more

The UK will likely keep in place social distancing measures until the government believes COVID-19 is under control. But what methods are the government implementing to fight the virus?

The first is to fund several projects researching a vaccine for coronavirus. Both the University of Oxford and Imperial College London are running clinical trials to find a vaccine with government funds. Once a vaccine is found and distributed on mass, medical experts expect the COVID-19 pandemic to be over.

The second strategy is to attempt to figure out how much of the population is infected or have previously been infected with the virus and therefore are immune to COVID-19. To do this a new study is being rolled out, testing over 20,000 English households to improve understanding of just how far the virus has spread. Volunteers will have to take regular swab tests to see if they currently have the virus and 1,000 of them will take blood tests, or anti-body tests, to see if they have previously had coronavirus. This will be key to giving the government enough data to see when lockdown measures can start to be relaxed. read more

New York City will begin closing streets to traffic and ban close contact sports in city parks to help combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday.

He called the street closures “a pilot program” and said sports like basketball would be banned in city parks, first on a voluntary basis as long as people comply, in rules agreed with New York City officials.

Cuomo added that New York state measures to control the coronavirus appear to be working as the rate of hospitalizations has slowed in recent days. read more
