Speaking outside his Ottawa residence, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday that businesses facing a rent crunch will need to hold on through the COVID-19 pandemic and help with an eventual economic recovery, instead of closing up and slowing the rebound.

He said the government “really hopes” commercial landlords will apply for a federal program launching next week that would give companies a break on the rent, warning that they may find themselves out of cash in the future if they evict tenants now. read more

Canadian health and government officials are expected to provide an update on the latest numbers of COVID-19 cases in the country and the federal government’s ongoing response to the pandemic.

Politicians returned to Ottawa over the weekend to debate the Liberal government’s emergency COVID-19 legislation which would allow companies to access a 75 percent wage subsidy for each employee.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau said on Saturday that the time frame for the payout of the wage subsidy for businesses has been moved up with the hope of occurring within two to five weeks, but are hoping to have the payout be closer to the shorter end of the time. read more
