Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke in the House of Commons on Saturday as the government passed a wage subsidy bill to help mitigate the economic impact of the novel coronavirus.
The Trudeau government struck the deal with opposition parties to swiftly approve a massive $73-billion wage subsidy program aimed at helping businesses and workers survive the economic ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Passage of legislation needed to implement the program was assured Saturday after Conservatives dropped their attempt to tie the bill to the longer-term question of how Parliament should function in the midst of a national health crisis.
The novel coronavirus could cost 11,000 to 22,000 Canadian lives over the course of the pandemic — and that’s the best-case scenario with the strongest control measures in place to contain the spread of the virus.
That’s according to modelling released by Canadian public health officials for the first time on Thursday, which lays out three different potential scenarios based on strong, medium and weak responses to containing the virus.
It’s important to note projections are estimates based on the best available data so far, and that data can and does change regularly.

British Columbia has announced the first COVID-19-related death in the country.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said the man is one of two people at a North Vancouver care home who was diagnosed with the virus last week.
Henry said the man passed away Sunday night.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones and also of course to the staff that provided him care, and to his home at the Lynn Valley Care Centre,” Henry said.
