The Prime Minister’s chief adviser, Dominic Cummings, travelled out of London during the lockdown while ill with coronavirus symptoms. He was questioned by the police after travelling to Durham in an apparent breach of the lockdown rules.
It came as the government announced a new £1,000 fine for anyone arriving in the UK from abroad and failing to self-isolate for 14 days. The new quarantine rule is being introduced from June 8th. Ministers say it will help prevent a second wave of coronavirus infections.
US President Donald Trump has clashed with his top Covid-19 adviser Dr Anthony Fauci, accusing him of wanting “to play all sides of the equation”.
The US’ top infectious disease expert urged caution about reopening schools, and the economy.
“We don’t know everything about this virus and we really better be pretty careful, particularly when it comes to children,” Fauci told a Senate committee.
But Mr Trump described it as “not an acceptable answer”.
“Our country’s got to get back and it’s got to get back as soon as possible. And I don’t consider our country coming back if the schools are closed,” he said.
Downing Street’s chief adviser Dominic Cummings is self-isolating after displaying some symptoms of COVID-19.
