Coronavirus outbreak: World leaders raise billions for global vaccine alliance during summit

World leaders and representatives from over 50 countries virtually joined the Global Vaccine Summit hosted by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday to raise funds for GAVI (The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations), a public-private global health partnership.

The Global Vaccine Summit was able to raise 8.8 billion dollars for routine vaccinations in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Boris Johnson called for donations of at least $7.4 billion for GAVI to immunize further 300 million children in the world’s poorest countries by 2025 against diseases such as polio, diphtheria and measles.

During the summit, Johnson pledged £1.65 billion for GAVI, leaving the U.K. the world’s biggest donor for the GAVI alliance.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged $600 million to GAVI, saying “COVID-19 demonstrated that diseases know no borders and so the health of our citizens depends on the health of everyone, everywhere.”

U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a message in which he said “COVID-19 doesn’t discriminate, it’s mean, it’s nasty, but we’re going to take care of it together.”

Trump sent his regards to Johnson and “let’s get the answer” on defeating the novel coronavirus.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged $15 million to the alliance and called GAVI a symbol of global solidarity and a reminder that by helping others we can also help ourselves.
