Coronavirus: New York Records Deadliest Day Yet, Cuomo Says

New York state recorded 731 new coronavirus deaths Tuesday, marking the biggest one-day jump in the outbreak. The state’s death toll since the beginning of the outbreak is now 5,489, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The governor said the number of deaths include those patients that were placed on ventilators “at the peak” of hospitalizations.

“That’s why you’re seeing the number of deaths increase because these are people who came in at the peak. They were not successfully treated. They’re on a ventilator. The longer you’re on a ventilator, the less likely you come off the ventilator.”

New York is projecting a “plateau” of hospitalizations, according to the governor.

“You can see the growth (referring to a chart) and you see it’s starting to flatten. Again, this is a projection. It still depends on what we do and what we do will affect those numbers.”

Cuomo said people must continue to observe social distancing to achieve the plateau and save lives.

For most people, the virus causes mild to moderate symptoms such as fever and cough. But for some, especially older adults and the infirm, it can cause pneumonia or even death.
