Australia fighting ‘new war’ in coronavirus battle

Employment Minister Michaelia Cash says Scott Morrison’s announcements following a National Cabinet meeting on Friday marked the “first steps towards finally reopening the Australian economy”.

Ms Cash told Sky News host Chris Kenny a “D-Day” target of July is when the government hopes its released pathway will see “people back at work and businesses back in business”.

“Over the next four weeks, we see the gradual easing of restrictions, we see businesses coming back to life”.

“That’s why it is a three-step framework and people can see the light at the end of the tunnel”.

On Friday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison unveiled a three-step plan to reopen Australia, beginning with easing lockdown restrictions on hospitality services and businesses.

Mr Morrison had urged Australians to remain vigilant and to continue to adhere to social distancing measures throughout the three steps.

While states and territories will reopen their economies under the discretion of their respective leaders and depending upon local conditions.

Ms Cash also said the “war” the government is now fighting is to return a million Australians back to work.
